Have you heard of the Premier’s Reading Challenge?

This much-loved initiative sees more than 160,000 participants involved annually and aims to inspire students to read for pleasure and learning.

Over 900 Queensland schools have already signed up to take part; for many it’s an annual school event. Jamboree Heights State School share why they love the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).

“At Jamboree Heights, we see reading as a critical to our students’ success in learning and students are well versed with the mantra, ‘If you read, you will succeed’. We see the PRC as a great opportunity to celebrate and promote reading within our school.”

They also said “PRC is a great way to encourage and reward student reading efforts and can help expand reading choices.”

North Lakes State College have also registered again this year. “Students love to receive their certificates at parade. Meeting the reading targets allows them to experience a sense of accomplishment. Reading is so important to every single child.”

Labrador State School said “By participating in the PRC, our students enhance their literacy skills and continue to evolve their passion and joy of reading and literature.?They also increase their reading mileage through the number of texts they experience during the PRC.”

The challenge is open to students from Prep to Year 9 at state and non-state schools across Queensland, as well as children enrolled in an early childhood centre.

The reading period runs until Friday 26 August so there’s still plenty of time to read. Students must read the book allocation for their year level to complete the challenge and receive their signed certificate from the Premier.

Early childhood centres can take part in the challenge too by tallying the total number of experiences children have with books or other literacy activities over a one-week period during the early childhood participation period – 15 to 26 August.

There are still 5 weeks left to read so register now at readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/how-to-register.

There are prizes to be won! Booktopia (booktopia.com.au) book vouchers are up for grabs for those who complete and QSuper (qsuper.qld.gov.au) are once again offering a fantastic opportunity for 2 schools to win a full-day visit from author, Sue Whiting. Enter here: www.qsuper.qld.gov.au/prc2022.
