‘Parkour teaches you to be sure of what you are able to do’
David Belle, modern Parkour founder?
A new year always feels like a fresh start, a bit of a reset, and it gets me thinking about what I want to achieve in the year ahead. Not just in business?but in hobbies and interests too.?
I’ve started to get back into running and have booked a 5k in February and 10k in April to keep me accountable and to have a goal to aim for.
In the past, I’ve run quite a bit to keep fit and raise money for charity, so it's great to get back into the rhythm.?
The kids, on the other hand, have plenty of hobbies! Possibly why us parents don't have any/many ?? My middle son Finley recently joined Street Monkeys . It’s a Parkour academy in Preston and looks like so much?fun. I wanted to talk about it today as when I’ve mentioned it, most people don’t know what it is.?
What is Parkour?
Parkour is a type of urban sport founded in France in the 1990s and is now popular all around the world. You’ve probably seen it, but not realised what it’s called. It’s a type of freerunning across a man-made environment, such as buildings, without using any equipment and often involves climbing, jumping, vaulting and flips. Parkour can also be practised in nature areas and is classed as a physical discipline in which participants ‘move freely over and through any terrain using only the abilities of the body’.
5 Facts About Parkour ?? Parkour originates from French military obstacle training and gets its name from the French word ‘Parcours’, which means route or course.?
???Although it is said to date back to the 1930s, the modern version of parkour was made globally popular by ‘founder’ David Belle in the Nineties. He learned the art from his Parisian father Raymond, who used military obstacle courses in secret at night. He later created his own courses to practice endurance, strength and flexibility. This inspired son David to learn how to do it himself.?

???As Parkour’s popularity has grown, it’s become the inspiration for architects too and there are numerous buildings or urban spaces specifically made to invite users to treat it as a playground or outdoor gymnasium. The Southbank Centre in London, Brighton Marina and Albert Dock in Liverpool are just some of the UK’s Parkour hotspots. See more here .
???In 2017, the UK became the first country in the world to officially recognise Parkour as a sport. It is not currently part of the Olympics, but discussions to include it are underway...!
???Austrian Lorenz Wetscher holds the Guinness World record for the longest-standing Parkour jump between two buildings. On 8 October 2021, he successfully jumped 3.4 metres (11ft 2ins) for the jump between two Parkour blocks in Hall in Tyrol, Australia. This beat his own previous record from 2015 of 3.15 metres (10ft 3ins).?
