Hey there! Today, I want to talk about something that has been on my mind a lot lately: deep work. I stumbled upon this concept while reading an article about productivity and it completely fascinated me.
So, what exactly is deep work? In simple terms, it's the ability to focus intensely on a cognitively demanding task without any distractions, for a prolonged period of time. This means working with intense concentration and producing high-quality results.
The concept of #deepwork was introduced by Cal Newport in his book Deep Work, that I discovered via the Headway app, which I reviewed in a previous article. What I found most interesting about this concept is that it goes against the norm of constant interruptions and multitasking that we often experience in our work and personal lives.
Deep work highlights the value of single-tasking and creating an environment that supports and encourages deep focus. This concept resonated with me because I have always struggled with distractions and interruptions while working. I have often found myself getting sidetracked by notifications, emails, and other distractions, which in turn affects my productivity and efficiency.
One of the key factors that can negatively affect our ability to focus is attention residue. According to Cal Newport's book, attention residue occurs when we switch from one task to another, and our full attention does not automatically transfer to the new task. Some of our attention remains stuck on the previous task, especially if that task was unbounded or low-intensity in nature. Even if we complete the first task before switching, part of our attention will still remain on that task for a while.
So, what can we do to combat attention residue and encourage deep work? One way is to set aside specific time periods for deep work and stick to them. This can help us avoid constantly switching tasks and reduce the effects of attention residue. Additionally, using the "Focus" phone feature can help us eliminate distractions and keep our attention focused on the task at hand.
Deep work is a fascinating concept that can help improve productivity, efficiency, and the quality of work we produce. By creating an environment that supports deep focus, we can overcome distractions and produce high-quality results in less time. Remember to be mindful of attention residue and take steps to combat it, such as setting specific time periods for deep work and using the "Focus" phone feature. I hope you found this post helpful and informative, and I encourage you to try incorporating deep work into your own work routine.
