Have you had the "talk" yet?

No, not that talk, important as it is! I’m talking about the talk with your family or loved ones about what you are going to do if Trump wins. It is a real, and frightening, concern. Either "talk" requires the same sort of disturbing and deliberate forethought, about a threatening potential future. And how to survive that threat.

So I ask, have you had the that talk, yet?

Recently, my wife and I at least identified and broached the subject. I thought we should think about what we are going to do, if this man wins. I thought it might be a good idea to seriously begin considering moving out of the country, if that were to happen.

Although admittedly, we have not yet begun to fully answer these questions for ourselves, I very much recommend that you too begin considering this question. Not that everybody will, or should necessarily, pick up and head for the hills. If you stay, however, you should know that likely, over time, you will be living in a very different environment from the one you are living in now. You will be living in a country with the hallmarks of fascism.

You will be living in a crueler, more sadistic, meaner, punitive, and, increasingly intolerant, environment. ?Even more, truth will continue to be the enemy. Blame will be the norm. Persecution and savagery, will not be far behind. We are at a not unfamiliar inflection point in history.

If a certain political “misstep, “ or even a fluke, takes place in the election, it seems like the outcome could change on a dime. The fact that the criminal and the DA are neck and neck in the race, makes me feel like anything can happen. If some fluke or anomaly happens involving the electoral college and the supreme court, Trump could very well manage to get back into the White House. If that happens, we will be repeating a brutal and sordid history we have so recently lived through, a history that began in Germany. The rise of Nazism was not so long ago.

As the election draws nearer, Trump's rhetoric has become even more severe and punitive. He seems as though he is gearing up for a fight, hoping his supporters will follow him down that rabbitt hole. A continuation of democracy, versus a turn toward fascism, is what’s at stake in November.

If Trump wins, I believe it will quickly get bloody and brutal in our streets in the United States. Ethnic, liberal, and "different" enclaves will be targeted by soldiers of our own version of the Nazi Reichstag. I am still not sure how likely or not it is that he will win, although I can say that it is certainly possible. And that this scenario is a real possibility for us, is incredibly scary.

So, when you have "the talk" about whether you stay or go, you will be weighing the personal , unwanted, cost of either choice. I think the best way to avoid this situation in the first place, this choice, from becoming a real choice, is to make sure we do not elect Trump. But, if we do, the choice as to whether or not you stay, or go, will be a tough one.
