How to be successful in the corporate world, without sacrificing your mental health?

How to be successful in the corporate world, without sacrificing your mental health?

If you want to be successful in the corporate world, you need to be aware that you will have to make many sacrifices throughout your career.

And I'm not talking about hard work and putting in your time, energy and commitment.

I'm talking about how you will need to sacrifice:

→ not only your physical, mental, emotional health.

→ but potentially your true self.

The corporate world can be ruthless.

Many go in, knowing that it will test them and push them out of their comfort zone. Which, of course, is great for professional growth.

And yes they will make a lot of money along the way.

But not many realise the negative long term implications.

And as we can now see from the stories of many who took the decision to quit their corporate careers, after dedicating 10-25 years to the corporate grind, they realise that while the financial reward and perks are great, the other aspects of life may not be as enriching.

The clients and high achievers I've worked with share similar experiences and talk of:

→ Burnout

→ Strained relationships

→ Lack of work-life balance

→ Physical and mental health problems

→ Feeling unfulfilled.

→ Losing their mojo and zest for life.

→ A gradual detachment from their authentic selves.

→ Addiction and dependency on drugs, alcohol, social media, etc.

Now, you might argue:

It's not all doom and gloom.

The corporate world can be very enriching and it's great for your confidence and your overall lifestyle, etc.

And you might question:

What about those who seem to effortlessly navigate the corporate landscape, achieving success and maintaining happiness?

They seem to have it all figured out.

And are seemingly unphased by what's causing others to struggle.

→ Yes, I agree. They do exist.

And I've been lucky, to have spoken to a few of them and I have insights into their secret sauce.

So brace yourself.

The reason they are/were doing well and enjoyed their careers and life is because of these key skills. Throughout their career they've learnt to:

1. Build their self-confidence.

2. Nurture their self-esteem.

3. Increase their self-aware 10x.

4. Become highly emotionally intelligent.

5. Align their life with their values, purpose and goals.

6. Remain focused on the big visions they have for their professional and personal life.

And

7. Become self-disciplined and block time to look after their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fitness.

And the most important step:

8. They worked 1:1 with coaches & mentors. They sought help and support.

They acknowledge their struggles and the need for support and accountability.

Whenever, they experienced stress and overwhelm but were quick to take actions.

And when I asked them,

Do you think you could have done it on your own?

The answer is often:

→ It's na?ve to think you can figure out everything on your own.

→ The corporate world is unfamiliar territory for many.

→ Not many are able to balance career without losing focus on personal life and not burn out.

They acknowledge how time is precious and they value what coaching & mentoring can contribute to their overall life.

→ An important message for us all.

Yet, as a coach, I've noticed a common tendency, where high achievers who are struggling, are often the most reluctant to ask for help.

And sadly this is what leads to their downfall.

→ Don’t be one of them.

If you are a professional working in the corporate world and struggling,

it’s probably time to take a huge step back and reflect.

It can be daunting, especially if you are the first in your family, to secure a well paid role in investment banking, or with an accountancy firm, for example. The advice from your parents or friends to keep your head down and working hard no matter what, or to be resilient and strong and not challenge the manager who is rude or micromanaging you, may not always work in corporate.

Pretending to be confident is not the same as truly being self-confident.

Pretending that stress is not catching up with you, is only exacerbating the root cause of your overwhelm and unhappiness.

Pretending that everything is fine but struggling to sleep at night and lacking energy everyday is getting you closer to burnout.

There is no shame in the struggle.

It's all part of life and your journey.

No one is judging you.

I certainly won't.

PS: On a scale of 1-10, how would you score yourself on the 1 to 8 key skills above? Consider this your starting point for reflection and potential transformation.
