Have You Flossed Today???

Have You Flossed Today???

Okay, you might be thinking that is a weird question for me to be asking (as I am not a dentist) however, I promise, there is a reason I am asking, just hang in for a couple of paragraphs and it will all make sense…

To start, I have a confession to make. I am an irregular flosser, at best.

When I saw this image on social media, I totally felt it.

AND, if there is a meme about it, then I am hardly the only person in the world that find flossing just — ugh.

Why is unclear to me, though I am sure there are reasons and explanations. I detest flossing, hence the irregular flosser (more like a regular non-flosser). In my defense, I have never had a cavity, though if I had, I might be more inclined to floss more frequently.

In the past, I have found alternatives that I would do more — we have a water pick that I use sometimes as well as those floss picks, the plastic holder with a tiny piece of floss.

Yesterday, I grabbed one of those floss picks even though I knew I should grab a couple of feet of floss and do it the right way. But here’s the thing… I had zero intention of grabbing the floss, it wasn’t going to happen.

This leads me to why I am writing this:

Is something better than nothing???

If in a month, I used my water pick half a dozen times, the floss picks 15 times, and regular floss twice (I am probably being generous here), that is better than simply flossing twice in the month, right?

While I still need to pose this question to a dentist or dental hygienist (maybe tag them to get their opinion) however I feel like even doing a little something is better than nothing.

This had me thinking (while I was in the bathroom using the floss pick) about goals and actually achieving them.

Sometimes I think that business owners and entrepreneurs have an all-or-nothing attitude and perhaps we want to evaluate that.

If you have a goal of making 50 calls today, and it ain’t going to happen, it is better to make 5–10 instead of 0, right?

If you have hundreds (or thousands) of emails in your inbox, getting rid of 20 emails is better than leaving the inbox without deleting a single one.

Perhaps you know you want to write a book and are concerned that you are already pressed for time, by putting pen to paper, for even 100 words, you are closer to your book being written. Heck, I wrote my 1st book this way. I wrote 1000 words a day and had the book written in under a month, the rough draft, that is.

Your goal of 10,000 steps is too daunting to tackle, maybe it is just a goal of — let me walk 100 more steps today than I did yesterday. Repeating that day after day.

In addition to my book, I have also used this something is better than nothing with both planking and meditating (and lots of other things, though this is supposed to be an article instead of a full book so I will limit myself).

When I first started planking, it was for only 30 seconds a day. After several days, when I was no longer dying before the timer went off, I upped my timer by 5 seconds. And then repeated the same process a few days later.

With meditation, I did similarly. I started off with 3-minute meditations, then 5, a jump to 10, etc.. While 3 minutes used to seem like a lifetime, I am now able to complete 60-minute meditations!

Baby steps to get started, right???

Sometimes, something is better than nothing!

What is something that you wish to undertake, whether it is something MASSIVE or minuscule, that you can do at least a little bit today in the pursuit of your success?

Please comment below and let me know what is SOMETHING you will do today!

Nice insightful article Tiffanie. Totally agree with you about breaking the goals in small chunks, nail that and then raise the bar a bit. I could relate to the examples you gave from your daily life. I started doing that a year ago with exercising. And has done wonders to my flexibility, endurance and strength. So far as my flossing regimen is concerned - it totally looks like your calendar above ?? I learnt the Kaizen philosophy couple of years ago, about breaking down the goals in small sustainable steps and tricking the mind into perceiving it insignificant! I try to implement it, slipping, trying again in certain areas still.
