Have you every been the minority?
This is an uncomfortable post to write but one that needs to be written.??Racism goes both ways; a month ago I wrote about the benefit of raising your child to be the minority learn humble acceptance and awareness, to have that lens; one that we have here in Uganda. “Racism is one of the worst things that is happening” to quote Asa on his current event summary on news in the US.??I agree – racism creates wars, hate and a sense of elitism.??My question to those who exhibit this behavior – what have you personally done to walk in the shoes of those you claim to hate???
We are in Kampala today before we head back to Bukedea, intended to be a Sunday with the things we enjoy and can only find here – hot water, Lucky Charms, seafood at the market.??Simple things.??Sunday is my day, uninterrupted with Asa – whatever we want to do, today we started his newest graphic novel concept – he talks I type and ask questions to solidify his story line.??We love this time.??Midway through we hear certain phrases from a loudspeaker directly above us…” yes that is what the white people want you to think”….”I am native Kenyan moved to Uganda and we n***as can rise up” …. “f**ck this white world.”??Wow.??All while I am sitting in front of you with my 10-year-old son.??Wow.
My questions if given the opportunity:
You cited two counties where you were the majority race and generalized about the minority, have you been the minority?
Why not come talk to me, ask me a question, know my story versus generalize?
How does racism currently impact your country???

How can I help change that impact if negative, as your neighbor who also lives in this community and seeks to leave this place better than I found it?
Is your rhetoric constructive for the change you want to see in the world?
Can I give you a hug?
This does not negate the atrocities committed by the white world, at all.??I just ask that we intend to seek a solution and speak to those who you were taught to hate, give me a break and seek to understand.??Living here is not easy for anyone; living as a black person person in American is not either.
Simple as that, hug your neighbor.??Seek to understand.??I would assume this person has no direct connection to the “white person” pushing him down as there very literally are none where we stay, and if he does, versus history, I want to help.??We cannot change what occurred in the past, but we can create a future of unity and model that versus fuel hate – hating is easy; forgiving and seeking to be a part of the solution takes far more courage.

Yes. Once in Adelaide when my (white) Aussie friend invited me to her Sudanese-Aussie husband's birthday. My husband and I had enjoyed a lot of social events with them. We walked into the party and there was about 50 Africans - and 3 white people of whom we were 2 - the hostess being the 3rd. Very enjoyable evening tinged with constant feeling of un-ease. As we drove home we discussed "how it feels when you're tge minority" In China in 1992 - At a time and in an area where where there were NO Caucasians. I lost my bearings on the way "home". Couldn't read the street signs. NO-ONE spoke English, "they" all looked different. Sounded different, smelt different ...I wasn't only "lost" I was a minority of 1 in what seemed tge whole 1 billion others. At the engagements, weddings and other events with my Rwandan friends - we are usually the only Caucasians. Though at my friend's funeral last week there were about 6 out of 400 "mourners" (though we were celebrating the life of one of the most amazing people on earth). The interesting thing is the Africans go out of their way to make us feel welcome and at home. If only WE all did the same for THEM. Heaven is going to be one very cool colourful place!!! Engagement

3 年Great article Jaime Fiorucci -- its true, we can never change racism simply by flipping around the systematic order where one race pushes down another race... i will say it this way: We all possess a common human brain that is emotionally developed. In real brain potential, hate is not easy, it is unfathomable -- in the virtues of real human brain development nobody would trade love for hate, in fact there would not be enough people in the world to love, regardless of what they look like. ????

3 年I’ve heard a lot of “White Girl,” in my life living in a number of neighborhoods. He probably feels threatened. Maybe opportunity and understanding will help.
