Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work on a luxury cruise ship?
HO YIN SY, (AKA MICHAEL), SERVICE ASSISTANT
A day in my life …
Depending on my schedule I usually wake up around 6:30am. My duty starts usually 7am or 7:30am. I always dress in my Service Assistant Uniform which is a smart uniform of pants, shirt and waistcoat and of course my name badge.
I go for breakfast in the crew mess before work, I usually eat eggs and bread and maybe some yogurt. I sit with my friends in the morning for breakfast, we have a good atmosphere and a good group of friends but of course at that time we are still a bit sleepy. After we have watched the morning news and had breakfast we are wide awake and ready for work.
I head up to La Terrazza and serve our guests breakfast until around 10:30am. At this time I usually go for a nap or do my laundry. At 11:30 I head for lunch before starting my next shift.
After the lunchtime shift, I go outside and find a coffee shop to sit for a while and contact my family and friends at home. In some ports I buy souvenirs to take home or take some pictures to upload to Facebook so everyone knows where I am!
When I come back to the ship, I usually shower and then head for my dinner. I have one more shift in the restaurant before finishing my day. Before starting the shift, I prepare the canapés for the evening. We also have a team briefing where Head Waiter or Waitress presents the guest food options for the evening. Once service starts, I bring the food from the Galley to the Waiter station. At the end of service, I am in charge of Le Champagne so it is my duty to clean up. Once this is done, I am finished for the night.
After work I sometimes go to the Crew Mess and play video games with my friends. Sometimes I go to the crew bar; sometimes we have parties in there.
My favorite thing about working for Silversea is seeing the world. My favorite place so far is Monte Carlo because it is a very modern city and there are lots of nice cars there and nice places to see! If I didn’t work for Silversea I don’t think I would ever have had the opportunity to visit Monte Carlo.
