Have you ever wondered about the best way of introducing more natural light into a dark terraced house?

Natural light significantly lifts and enhances your experience of living in a space, as well as your sense of comfort and wellbeing. Given the typically narrow and elongated layout of these homes, maximizing natural light can be a challenge.

When I started writing this article I was just thinking about the internal additions that can transform a terraced house, such as transom windows, clerestory windows, glass doors, room dividers and glass staircases, but of course if your budget stretches far enough to include structural changes, then bring it on! Below I have listed some of the methods used to introduce more light.

Skylights or roof lights are a super effective way to bring light into the top floors of a terraced house, especially in spaces that lack windows or are at the centre of the house.

Light tubes or solar tubes are also a great option for bringing natural light into hallways, stairwells, or small rooms that do not have exterior windows.

Extending the back of the house with a glass or semi-glass extension can introduce a significant amount of light. This can be particularly effective for kitchens or living rooms that lead out to the garden. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels or sliding glass doors can create a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors, maximizing light penetration.

Where possible, a light well or small internal courtyard can bring natural light to the lower floors or basement areas of a terraced house. These features can also provide ventilation and a small outdoor space.

Removing any unnecessary internal walls to create an open-plan layout can help light travel more freely through the house. Combining smaller, darker rooms into larger, more open spaces can significantly increase the amount of light that reaches the interior.

Expanding the size of existing windows or replacing them with larger ones can greatly enhance the amount of natural light entering the house. Consider installing full-height windows or bay windows where structurally possible.

An open stairwell or one with glass balustrades can allow light to move between floors more effectively. A glass staircase or incorporating glass steps further enhances the transmission of light.

Glass partitions or doors between rooms helps distribute light throughout the house, particularly in the ground floor and lower levels, allowing for the division of spaces without blocking the flow of light.

Strategically placed mirrors can reflect natural light deeper into the house, particularly in narrow hallways or small rooms. Using glossy or reflective surfaces for walls, floors, or furniture can also help to bounce light around the space.

Light and neutral paint colours on walls and ceilings can help maximize the effect of natural light, making spaces feel brighter and more open. Choose light-coloured flooring materials, such as pale wood or tiles, to enhance the flow of light.

Opt for sheer curtains, blinds, or shutters that allow light to filter through while providing privacy.

To really maximize natural light in a terraced house involves a combination of structural changes and design elements. By using techniques like skylights, open-plan layouts, and reflective surfaces, you can transform a dark, narrow space into a bright, airy, and inviting home that makes the most of the available natural light.

Which way do you think is the best for enhancing natural light in a dark terraced house?

Thank you! I really love natural light, and the different ways you can introduce it, and integrate it, plus the shadowplay! I love using glass doors, windows, furniture and/or accessories with light! What type of window is your favourite?
