Have you ever heard of SEL Mirrored Bits Communication? Yes, 2 SEL Relays communicate just like 2 iPhones communicate using iMessage! SEL Protocol
MIRRORED BITS! SEL Relays! I told this facility supervisor that he might not realize it, but his crew is often not following the proper switching sequence at the substation. If you consent, I can force them to follow the appropriate sequence by reprogramming the relays with MIRRORED BITS communication.
The supervisor asks,
"How do you know they are not following the proper switching sequence?"
Me: "Your facility is designed to capture hundreds of digital data and record them during "anomalies" in your system. I have thousands of data across the last 5 years, and I can see the sequence during all your shutdowns and startups.
?The order in which many digital data assert and deassert tells me the order in which the breakers are opening and closing.?In most cases, that order does not follow the switching sequence in your procedure."
You have no idea how that supervisor looked at me. He thought I was the most intelligent human being alive; unfortunately (or fortunately for me), he had no idea I just knew how to use tools to their fullest. It had nothing to do with engineering.
It is not that far from knowing how to use an app to check my heart rate. It is true that it takes skills to understand how the relays work, navigate them and interpret the data. However, once you familiarize yourself with those steps, the actual task of retrieving them and making a conclusion is a low-skill task.
So, I proposed something cool. I will connect your SEL relays via serial cable and program them accordingly, so they can communicate at lightning speed and very securely via a proprietary SEL protocol called MIRRORED BIT!
What will happen is if someone closes the breaker at the wrong sequence, the breaker will engage and then stops to reopen. If someone tries to open the breaker in the wrong sequence, the breaker will never open.
Moreover, I can also program your relay to trip during dangerous conditions seen by other relays, even if there are no anomalies seen by that specific relay that tripped. The trip signal will be forced upon other relays to detect something wrong.
The event in Figure 1 below shows the outcome of the 2 schemes I implemented:
1- The trip occurred because this relay received a MIRRORED BIT Communication via the bit RMB3A. RMB stands for Received Mirrored Bit. The label of the bit is 3A.
2- RMB3A was sent by another relay in the other bus of the substation
3- Notice that the voltages and currents were all balanced with no issues. This relay saw no anomalies. Something wrong occurred further, and we removed the fault ASAP. The fault was removed before the incident reached the further part of the system.
4- Trip and RMB3A assert at the same time. No delays. 0 cycles delay, SPEED!

5- 52A breaker received the trip, and the breaker was opened 3.5 cycles later
Figure 1: Relay event showing mirrored bit communications
Now, look at another received bit, RMB2A. RMB2A asserts after the breaker opens and it will stay asserted the entire time. If the procedure switching sequence is not satisfied, I program the relay to maintain that RMB2A, preventing this breaker from closing.
Well, guess what happened? At 17:52, The supervisor was called because, somehow, the breaker was not closing. The breaker engages, and 1 second later, it opens back up. He smiled and asked: "Are we following the switching procedure?". Everyone answered, "Yes, we are!". He smiled again; he already knew.
Yes, sir, we implemented another layer of protection in case human fails! Engineering controls. A fatal error made by a human is no longer fatal because we inserted another layer of protection that does not require human interaction.?
We took away safety decisions from human hands, and we did not tell them, so they won't become complacent. Moreover, Mirrored Bit communication logic is not shown on any schematics because the logic stays in the relay. A worker will not know it exists, so it removes the complacency.
Simply BRILLIANT?

2 年Thierry, you continue to go where no one has gone before and I like it. The new power generation is so much more complicated than ever and you are exposing those complications like no one before. I would expect that operating one’s substation breakers in the wrong manner also put’s unnecessary stress on all the components involved (The breakers themselves, VTs, switches, surge arresters, cable, splices, transformers) and no one really knows or is capturing or understanding these stressors that eventually lead to component premature aging and failure.
