Have you ever been 'riggwelted'?

Riggwelted: A Yorkshire dialectal term; a sheep in fleece stuck on its back and unable to right itself is said to be ‘riggwelted’.

Who amongst us hasn’t felt a similar frustration in business, knowing you need to move but being completely unable to? Cash flow pressures, a limit to capabilities, and equipment deficiencies may all be things that leave you feeling ‘riggwelted’.

I say this because, over the last few days, I’ve been shocked at the news coming from Masham, North Yorkshire. Riggwelter is not just an archaic term from an old Yorkshire dialect; it’s also one of the finest beers you’ll ever drink.

Which is why it’s such a shame that The Black Sheep Brewery have had to call in the administrators. Especially when you consider their history. Launched in 1992 by the ‘black sheep’ of the Theakston family, following their eponymous brewery being acquired by a large corporation, it must surely have been a brave move to go it alone rather than take what was offered and rest on your laurels.

Believing in themselves, The Black Sheep Brewery invested in their vision. And as they grew, they acquired a sizeable estate, rescued other struggling breweries, and remained a proudly renegade, Yorkshire firm.

And whilst the recent news is upsetting, it is sadly indicative of a sector which has suffered more than most over the last few years.

That is not to say help will not arrive and the Black Sheep name will live on.

But it is a clear warning to us all that no business can afford to be static, especially in such uncertain times as these.
