Have you done any "Blue-Sky Thinking"? recently?

Have you done any "Blue-Sky Thinking" recently?

According to a Google search ... "Blue-Sky Thinking" is the activity of trying to find completely new ideas.

In a world full of all the new ideas which we came up with in the previous couple of decades ... do we really still need to come up with "completely new ideas" or can we simply put some old ones into practice instead?

What are the basics of a building a successful business?

For some people it's as simple as ... create a product or service ... find potential customers ... ask them to pay money for the product / service (enough to make a profit) ... and repeat.

Others would argue that it's much more complex and far more stressful than this ... and who am I to argue?

I've had the pleasure of working for some of the best known "brands" (as well as a few lesser known) ... but all of these business had the same goal ... to make a profit.

None (and I mean NONE) had a mission statement on the wall that said ... "Our mission is to make a profit from the work we do and the services we provide."

I won't go into the actual mission statements because they were usually too many words with too little real understanding behind them.

So, is it a case that sometimes we deliberately make things more complex because we don't want to believe that our real end goal is to make money?

Is making money something to be ashamed of?

If you think "yes" then let's ask the question another way ... is providing for your family a bad thing?

I didn't think it is ... so let's keep things simple.

Businesses must make a profit or they will go out of business ... so ... here comes the "blue-sky" bit ... focus on delivering a product / service that customers are willing to buy because they will enjoy using it / owning it ... for more than it cost to provide and maybe, just maybe, it will be all worthwhile.

What do you think?

Excellent article @Jim Meldrum.? "Making a profit" is NOT a bad thing. However, what gives "making a profit" a bad NAME is the manner in which some individuals and businesses go about doing it.?? Call me naive, old fashioned or whatever (I've been called a lot worse) but, if it's done ethically and with integrity ('unfashionable' words/concepts sometimes nowadays), making a profit is GOOD!?
