ClariTea Chat with V Srinivasa Rao, Author “Lean Digital Thinking,” and a Digital Transformation thought leader brought out a very non-technical but critical takeaway - ?Visualization and Design Thinking are very important for the digital-led growth of the organization.?

Over the discussion, I quickly jotted down 4 Ideas Worth Sharing.?

Your past experiences mold your future capability. VSR shared his significant learnings at Infosys, iGATE, and Satyam (which merged with Tech M), before being a solopreneur.?

• Creating Opportunities: - Have an attitude toward creating opportunities. Instead of just focusing on the assigned task, dedicate additional time to creating new opportunities. Visualize strategy till execution.?

• Accepting challenges, & Leadership skills: - To elevate from the current position, accept challenges to grow.??

When VSR joined Satyam, it was a hostile situation. With self-belief and leadership ability, he built a team. He re-created a positive brand for stakeholders, customers, etc.?

Your ability to take on challenges presents you with opportunities. Taking the conversation forward, VSR shared his learning in Tech M.??

• The solution starts with the business problem, not the technology: - Product companies are focused on technology. They start designing technological solutions before even understanding the exact customer problem. Understand the problem before figuring out the solution.?
• Self-Assessment: - Eating your dog food. Are you implementing what you are doing or selling - in your own company??Develop your internal capability, which can help you sell your product with conviction.??

Shifting the gears to VSR’s book - “Lean Digital Thinking” And 12*12*5 principles, a holistic framework of assessment and path or journey forward.???

IT era is dead: - Digital technology is the future. A fusion of communication, collaboration, information, and operational technology.???

Overall focus: - Look at the business model like human anatomy. Change business strategy with technology fusion. Redefine your KPIs.?

Business Anatomy: -?The business anatomy consists of 4 Digitalization clusters and 4 Thinking Clusters.

• Digitalization clusters are: -

Cluster 1: Digitalize Business Blueprint - business model, strategy, outcomes...

Cluster 2: Digitalize Technology Foundation - Architecture for the digital business blueprint

Cluster 3: Digitalize Offerings - How you will incorporate digital in your products and services.

Cluster 4: Digitalize Business Operations - Workplace and automation in operations processes, reduce human intervention, real-time communication and collaboration, and most importantly -

VSR shared that every customer is not going to digitalize everything. Now, new thinking is required, called Lean Digital Thinking. He explained the 12 thinking principles divided into 4 thinking clusters.?

1. Thinking cluster 1: Visualize the Digital Future: The thinking process required here is to visualize a better today and tomorrow. And nurture the talent for Digital Business.
2. Thinking cluster 2: Achieve Digital Execution Excellence: Eliminate non-value-added activities, improve predictability with data, optimize human interventions and establish real-time collaboration. All with greater safety and privacy. + Engage with startups to catalyze all these.
3. Thinking cluster 3: Embrace Social Responsibility: ESG is coming into greater awareness of your customers and the ecosystem. Focus on designing socially responsible products, services, and value chains.?
4. Thinking cluster 4: Deliver Unforgettable Moments of Experience:?

To reach that Lean Digital Thinking, VSR explained the Lean Digitization Journey through 5 phases:?

• Inspire the people towards digitization.??
• Assess the budget, resources, etc.??
• Innovate to fill the digital gap. You not only digitize a product or a service - but you also need to design a solution.?
• Experiment to come up with a minimum viable product.?
• Institutionalize where change management will be needed. Whatever is experimented with needs to be established as a solution.?

So, let's understand the overall advice for the CEOs and CIOs:?

• Change: - Every CIO and business needs to understand that changes will take place. Be ready for that.??
• Visualize the future, build new skills, capabilities, and behavior, and be future-ready.??
• Focus on eliminating the waste in an organization during digitalization.??
• Nothing is perfect - After embedding digital thinking, there can be some gaps. Identify them and change them from today to tomorrow.??

Moving further, one of the audiences asked about the future of enterprise IT? Which technologies will lead, and how will they be adapted??

• 2010-15: SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics & Cloud)?
• 2015-20: IoT?
• 2020-2025: Great adoption of AI, machine learning, internet of nano things. Blockchain became prominent and Virtual reality (Metaverse).?

An interesting question came from the audience: Operational IT works on a specific hardware platform, and other software is platform independent. How do you reimagine DT when there is a walled garden??

• Ecosystems: Think beyond walled gardens - extend your business ecosystem irrespective of heterogeneous elements. Focus on and leverage the opportunities.?

I added two cents to the audience’s question: How is the structure impacting the process of decision-making??

• Create empowered structures: - Outline the lines of accountability and decision making.?
• Experimentation: - Empower the experimentation part. Allocate the budget for experiments.??

To conclude, it was a very impactful session that made us realize to change our thinking processes. VSR took us to a different world of lean digital thinking which is a mandate for the company to grow in the future.??
