Are we so fragile that our inability to access a census website causes this level of national angst?

8 年did mine a week before, knew where I would be, and knew, something like that, would happen, watching the media, in previous times, for example, when an armageddon of shoppers would saturate a shopping site, that had mega sales, for a day, and the site crashed. trying to get australia to to do it in one day? no wonder, there was havoc. their wording was wrong in the message, the govt, was trying to get across, to the public. instead of saying, on that particular night, they should've said- UP TO THAT PARTICULAR NIGHT !!! i'm sure the outcome, would've been better ;) a classic moment of, too many cooks, spoil the broth LOL ;)

8 年Bernard, your level of personal competence is to be congratulated. However not all Australians are as tech savvy or secure. In addition, not everyone would have been aware that census completion could be made so late. The ABS continually assured us that the website was ready and would be able to manage the volume of traffic on the night. It was not. In fact, no untried website is immune to the issues faced by the Census on the night. It would have helped for the ABS to communicate this. A little more empathy for those who are not like you and me would improve your generally welcome commentary.
I found the time of the census interesting. With an ageing population and those who like to go overseas in the winter, I would imagine the figures are going to be quite misleading.
Using the power of communication for good!
8 年The public relations debacle wasn't just about people being unable to access the website... It was about the perceived competence of the ABS (which had assured everyone beforehand that the site could cope) combined with data privacy concerns.

8 年Great headline. I thought of you as the kerfuffle around the census erupted. I remember sitting with you going through ABS data for a graphic running in The Australian many many moons ago.
