Have I forgotten?
Over the last few weeks, there have been a plethora of “experts” on this forum giving advice on how to apply for jobs, what kinds of attitude applicants should have, what they should say, what they shouldn’t, how to interview, what to post, on and on and on. Underlying these posts is the implication of how wonderful the posters themselves are, how strong we are and how we did things the right way. Phrases like “I only want unicorns”, “stop applying randomly”, “be tough”, “don’t be so lazy” and “don’t give me a sob story”, are bandied about a lot. A slew of “likes” from well-meaning followers strokes their fragile egos even more. As I read these, I sometime find myself starting to agree and then I stop and ask myself - Is it possible that I have forgotten?
Have I forgotten that some are down and out and desperately hurting because they have been laid off, often through no fault of their own?
Have I forgotten that they are searching for a new home where they can make a difference in a nurturing, fertile environment?
Have I forgotten that it is easy to become jaded, bitter and depressed when it takes so long to find a home?
Have I forgotten that they need love (yes, tough love definitely), understanding, support and compassion – not sanctimonious and condescending lectures from white tower dwellers?
Have I forgotten that they, like us, may deserve loving the least, when they need it the most?
Have I forgotten that these are sharp, hardworking, smart, talented, passionate folks who will one day change the world?
Have I forgotten that success is ephemeral and one who is now first will soon be last?
Have I forgotten that the master may one day sit at the feet of the servant?
And most importantly - Have I forgotten that, there, but for the grace of God, go I?
