To have a DNA changing impact. Why not.

This is so special.... Since you know me, can I challenge you to read this till the end?

A spontaneous share.

What really excites me time and time again - Apart from special impact for Uber, MTN, Garmin, LG and many big companies that we bring out in the most unique way - is the special impact we have on the smallest most unique businesses.

It reminds me when a restaurant owner walked into our office some years ago and said:

"thank you SO MUCH for featuring us when we opened. I walk the tables after service; The first few MONTHS, EVERY second table came through CapeTownMagazine.com.

Someone said once: You always talk about "Not selling. Story telling" But you're going another step: That's story making"

(you can imagine the difference in cash flow having or not having this turnover...)

To come back to why I am posting this.

Its not just our readers discovering: Religiously, our team shares their discoveries every Monday (you should hear the laughter and banter with such a diverse team).

Two weeks ago intern Katleho picked a little gem of a restaurant called Yens in De Waterkant. We do the scan. It was featured. Activated.

And because our editor Sonya Schoeman edited the feature herself, she now is curious and immediately went to for dinner as well.

This is what she shares with the team this afternoon:

"my friend and went to Yen's on Thursday after I read the (CapeTownMagazine.com) review. We had such an amazing evening – it's such a simple spot, but the food was incredible, the energy really friendly, and it was packed. What a good find! And it's lovely to know that the spot is popular – so an article on CapeTownMag that spreads the news about it really contributes to sustaining a small business like that. Well done on finding it. We had a fabulous night and will be going back. PS. If you're thinking of going, book first!"

So why this long post...

It reminded me again of all the magic we created that we forgot in the hell of the last 24 months. It's the little things that are big:

My editor herself needs to experience our impact herself - (clearly our millions of reach each week do not make it tangible :-).

And I know these little things done smart yet simple (means many people never see what we do) have led to some of these places making 21% of their annual turnover through CapeTownMagazine.com's investment in an industry impact initiative (SME partner impact programme).

Other places increased their Wednesday night turnover by 50% over a year in this programme. Or made 30% of turnover in season through this programme.

Our purpose is to have a DNA changing impact on this destination. Through moments of joy. For happier people. For a better place. Unwrapping the most unique SMEs and its people around the corner. Creating a magnet the world can not wait to be a part of.

of our readers:

  • 79% discovers more in different suburbs
  • 84% discovers places they never knew about
  • 4 out of 5 loves Cape Town more

because of CapeTownMagazine.com

So, DNA changing impact.
Perhaps we're 'having it'.

You're still here and interested about the simple Vietnamese place with delicious food that caused me to write this,

I know.

Read about here:

https://www.capetownmagazine.com/yens-vietnamese

I always say there's genius in simplicity. Perhaps Yens and us; we're similar...

DID YOU KNOW

In this New Places programme CapeTownMagazine.com have featured, kickstarted and activated a new place weekly for the last 8 years amounting to around 400 new places, entrepreneurs, employees. Small unique SMEs and their founders, entrepreneurs that bring flavours that bring our the city. Make them discover someone (else) backs them.

Because a discovery is a moment of joy. Because a new place is a discovery for the broadest possible audience at that particular time. Because being featured in such a way it impacts a business also is a discovery and moment of joy for the entrepreneur. And for the team working in a place that has just opened their doors.

And lots of discoveries create something we love embodying; Every time one thing you would not want to miss

We activate, as if they paid us. So with full effort, scan and activation to a rate card value of R32 000, and a further R32 000 value throughout the year. This means we invested R18+ million in new places over these years. Without sponsors and forgoing profit for this. Because they create moments of joy. they create employment. They make this city.

We've seriously committed to championing them, not to feature them, but to champion what makes a destination and its people who create and make them. For DNA changing impact.

Thank you for being part of my journey - and purpose.

All of you have had a DNA changing impacted in my life. So...

That's why I live here. And get up in the morning every day. So never think a small group of people cannot change the world. In fact. It is the only thing that ever has.

Apologies for the long post ; a spontaneous sharing of a comment from my editor lead to this.

Enjoy a good night.
And the dinner at Yens ;-)

ps. If you think of a brand managers that want to create a DNA changing impact and are interested in STORY MAKING with core values that celebrate the above and that back the most unique SMEs and its people: You know we do things that work.

Great post Marcus. Thanks for creating excitement around our wonderful city and its small businesses. So glad for all of us in tourism to see it get busy again.

Very impressed, you put it so well. A successful destination is the sum of many things, not the least of one entrepreneur who creates an international online platform for the others who are mostly on ground ??????
