Have a break have a Kit Kat

Do you remember that ad? If you do, we’re probably around the same age! It’s one of the most memorable ads I’ve seen. Marketing has always fascinated me, especially the psychology behind it. How does it work?

Years ago, as a university student, I thought marketing was just clever ads with a clear message: “Buy this product.” But over time, I realized that, in some cases, we’ve been “manipulated” or “misled” about products, often not getting the full story.

I’m doing some research on this, and while it’ll take time to finish, I encourage you to reflect now: how many times have you bought something you didn’t really need? How much money have you wasted on unnecessary products?

We live in a fast-paced, consumer-driven world, and our lives are often filled with clutter — in our thoughts, possessions, and surroundings. This clutter can affect your work, personal life, and overall well-being. Just this weekend, I went shopping with my son for essentials. I was mindful of our purchases and felt great knowing I didn’t bring home more unnecessary items to stash away.

Here are a few ways to declutter your life and mind:

  1. Be mindful when shopping: Before making any purchase, ask yourself if you truly need the item. Avoid impulse buys and focus on essentials.
  2. Use the money you saved for a reward gift: After practicing mindful spending, treat yourself with the money saved. Use it to reward yourself with something meaningful or an experience you’ll cherish.
  3. Organize your space: A clutter-free environment leads to a clearer mind. Start small by organizing one area of your home or workspace, and notice how much better you feel.
  4. Set priorities: Reduce mental clutter by identifying your top priorities. Focus your energy on what matters most, instead of getting lost in the noise.
  5. Spend more 'me' time: Prioritize self-care and carve out regular time for yourself. While at work, ensure you take at least a 15-minute break away from your desk to refresh and recharge.
  6. Limit distractions: In a world full of noise, it’s important to set boundaries with technology and social media. Cut back on activities that consume your time and attention unnecessarily.
  7. Declutter your mind in 3 minutes: I always tell this method to my clients and students: Imagine your mind is like a desk with drawers. Now, it’s chaotic—papers everywhere. Take three minutes to mentally organize. One by one, start tidying up the papers (your thoughts) based on their priority or urgency. By the end, you'll have a clear, organized mental desk, knowing exactly where to start taking action first.

By decluttering your mind and space, you’ll gain more focus, improve your performance, and create room for a more balanced and fulfilling life.Thank you
