Have the 2022 updates passed you by?

LinkedIn is now the world’s largest professional social media platform, and should be an essential part of your working life. If it isn't, you might be missing a trick because I can't think of any type of business or profession that would not benefit from unparalleled access and influence to virtual communities of peers, markets, academics, customers, clients, etc.

What may have been missed is that the algorithm used to control the platform was updated earlier in 2022 (May/ June), and several of the upgrades have been made public:

·????????Carousel posts are now openly favoured so include more than one video/ image.

·????????If it suits your style (it doesn't suit mine), include emojis and varying typography.

·????????If you ask for followers or interactions within your posts then they are de-prioritized.

·????????LinkedIn want well-written content, so ensure your grammar is on point (not perfect).

·????????Posts with links that take users outside of the platform are penalized (not a surprise).

·????????Try not to tag any more than 5 people in your posts, or use more than 5 hashtags.

·????????If someone comments on your post, be respectful/ courteous and start a conversation.

·????????The first 60 minutes of your post will ultimately determine its success or failure*.

*The algorithm uses content filters to predict popularity. If not deemed spam, content is shown to a small group and, if they react, the algorithm shares to much wider audiences.

What hasn't changed is that LinkedIn favors individuals over companies so, for company page exposure, you need people to a) follow, b) share, and c) interact with the content. That is because a) the more followers a page has, the higher it ranks in search results, b) sharing content introduces it to new networks and c) interaction prioritizes content on all news feeds.

In summary, the algorithm has now been configured to benefit the users and penalize the 'players' (a welcome move). With that in mind, post with your network in mind, and resist trying to optimize an algorithm (they are now almost one in the same). Finally, mobilize and empower your workforce to help with LinkedIn and, most of all, have fun whilst doing it!

Absolutely Steven! It’s such a powerful platform when used in the right way. It’s being updated all the time so staying up to speed with algorithm and features is important to ensure everything you do is optimised. Even in the last month we’ve seen a number of changes. Keep up the great work!

Great to see the latest stats (as of yesterday) show that LinkedIn now has more than 875 million users. If you and your business aren't using it already, you're losing opportunities.
