HAULAGE OF LESSER KNOWN PRODUCTS IN THE TILE INDUSTRY IN GHANA AND THE HIDDEN OPPORTUNITIES THEREIN
William Awuku

Haulage has been a lucrative business in Ghana for several decades now minerals, timber, cocoa and foodstuffs. Where there were trains in the past, trains were the main means of haulage but in the absence of trains, trucks were used to cart all the above products.
In Ghana, road haulage activities have accounted for deplorable state in which we find most roads and despite the effort of government to change the narrative and develop our rail network, I can without any doubt in my mind say that we are at least 10 years away from seeing any significant haulage activity transferring from road to rail.
The absence of railway in the haulage space presents an incredible opportunities for high net worth individuals and companies that have already invested in haul trucks and those planning same to make their specs available for assignment.
The New Normal
Haulage used to be a lucrative business if it was in mining of gold, bauxite, diamond or manganese, carting timber or cocoa and to a lesser extent some classes of foodstuff. Today in Ghana, a whole new area of haulage has opened as a result of the emerging tile industry making hitherto little known products such as clay, basalt, feldspar and limestone areas of great interest for haulage.
Two distinct trucks are required to service this industry, 20cubic metre to 25 cubic metre trucks to cart mainly clay or other products that stick to truck buckets and 40cubic metre to 50cubic metre trucks (semi-trailers) used for carting basalt, feldspar and limestone with 24 hour operations around the southern parts of Ghana.
Companies with a fleet of semi-trailers looking to enter this haulage space can make contact with the author who can help get work for more than (200 units) of 45 cubic metre trucks with contracts spanning an average of one year. The icing on the cake is that all the contracts will be out sourced to the truck owner and so they will be able manage the business according to their own preferences as long as they meet the minimum level of performance.
