A lot of leaders have posted lately about being approached by job seekers in an inconsiderate and needy way. While networking may be a natural part of professional life for those who do it frequently, for those who have recently lost their livelihood in an uncertain time, or haven't been "on the market" in ages it can be dreadfully uncomfortable, and messaging can be awkward.
If you’re among those feeling clumsy when it comes to networking, take a second to put yourself in the shoes of those you’re about to ask for help.
Here are 3 things you can do to make great connections without being seen as a burden.
- Seek to give before you get. First, get genuinely curious about your existing network. Reach out to your first connections and check in on them. If you invite them for a virtual coffee to catch up, and they accept, be gracious and attentive during your time together. Slow down and really make an effort to reconnect.
- Ask if there’s anything you can do for them in these unique times, and be ready to offer your help if they do ask for it. If they return the offer, and ask how they can support you, be ready with something specific. Do they have a connection to someone you’d like to know? Ask if they’d be comfortable connecting you. Do they know anyone at X company you’re interested in? Ask if they know anything about the work environment.
- At the end of the discussion, ask for their advice as you’re seeking to network with others. Is there anyone they’d recommend you network with?
Make sure to thank them for their time and maybe even repeat your offer to help them, if they should ever need it.
Patience with each other, kindness and a genuine desire to connect can get us all through this trying time.
