Hate Crimes - How Businesses Can Help Stop Them
Laura Bosworth
I find talent for great companies doing big things. Talent Richness Expert, Author and International Speaker - I’m also contending with the ups and downs of living with Multiple Sclerosis ??
I am very passionate about inclusion - no real shock there if you have seen any of my shares on social media. I am also a great advocate of stopping hate crimes, stalking, animal abuse and just general dickish behaviour.
I do not understand why there are so many mean people in the world.
I support programmes, initiatives and charities that, like me, stand up against all the baddies. Now, I am no superhero, but I am tough and principled - and I don't take any $hit!
I believe that helping combat hate crimes involves both individual and collective efforts to promote tolerance, awareness, and support for affected communities.
Following a shocking stat I saw from Sal Naseem FRSA about the Home Office figures on Hate Crimes, I felt compelled to write a list of some ways to make a positive impact within your organisation when it comes to stopping the baddies:
Educate Yourself: Start by learning about different cultures, religions, and backgrounds. Understand the experiences and challenges faced by marginalised communities.
Raise Awareness: Share information about hate crimes and their consequences with your friends, family, and social networks. Use your platform to condemn hate speech and discrimination.
Report Hate Crimes: If you witness or experience a hate crime, report it to the relevant authorities. Encourage others to do the same, as accurate data is crucial for tracking and addressing these incidents.
Support Victims: Offer emotional support to victims of hate crimes and their families. Listen to their experiences, show empathy, and connect them with resources like counselling or legal assistance.
Volunteer: Get involved with organisations that combat hate and promote tolerance. Volunteer your time and skills to support their initiatives. Even if it little things like sharing initiatives with your network - you will often see me share posts and refer to the Suzy Lamplugh Trust on here - as I am a huge advocate for the work they do with regards to their mission is to reduce the risk and prevalence of abuse, aggression, and violence - with a specific focus on stalking and harassment - through education, campaigning, and support.
Promote Inclusivity: Advocate for inclusive policies and practices in your workplace, networks, or community. Encourage diversity and equity in hiring, education, and decision-making - call me with regards to sorting that out??
Speak Up: Challenge hate speech, stereotypes, and discrimination when you encounter them. Use your voice to promote understanding and acceptance.

Allyship: Stand in solidarity with marginalised communities. Be an ally by actively supporting and amplifying their voices and concerns - quietly being disgruntled is not enough anymore - use your voice and power.
Organise or Attend Events: Participate in events, workshops, or seminars that promote intercultural understanding and tolerance.
Political Engagement: Advocate for legislation that addresses hate crimes and promotes inclusivity. Vote for candidates who prioritise these issues.
Support Legislation: Encourage Westminster or relevant Lawmakers to pass and enforce hate crime laws and policies that protect vulnerable communities.
Cultural Exchange: Engage in cultural exchanges and dialogue to foster understanding and appreciation of diverse backgrounds.
Donate: Contribute to organisations that fight hate crimes and provide resources to victims and survivors.
Encourage Education: Encourage schools and institutions to incorporate diversity and inclusion education into their curriculum.
Lead by Example: Demonstrate respect, empathy, and inclusivity in your daily interactions.
Be a role model for others.
Remember that combating hate crimes is an ongoing effort that requires collaboration and persistence. Small actions can collectively make a significant impact in creating a more inclusive and accepting society.
