The race is back on..and that brings opportunity and risk…
In addition to a major amount of M&A, PE and ECM activity across the board - There has been a lot of movement at the station in the past month or two across the board both at a senior level and in functional and business development roles.
At the top - this includes new Chief Executives for Australia Post, AMP and Medibank as well as new CEO’s in superannuation, investment management, general insurance, at international banks, big 4 consulting firms, fintech platforms, and in the property, resources, energy and renewable sectors. The ‘hot’ functional sectors remain digitally led and risk, closely followed by demand for CFO’s that can make the transition to public markets as smaller company scales up for listing or a sale process.
There has also been a lot of movement in the ‘real asset’ (infra/real estate/pe/credit) sector more broadly. From a product point of both domestic and international investment managers s are struggling sometimes to define their point of difference to investors in an increasing crowded, complex and overlapping sector.
Some countervailing market forces are that major ‘people’ heavy organisations are continuing to focus on ‘cost-out’ – moving towards a ‘barbell’ model – a smaller number of highly qualified senior leaders and less middle management.
From an individual perspective
Those in search processes (whether as an internal or external candidate) for senior roles – need to think carefully about how they position and present themselves in very competitive processes to key stakeholders (preferably ahead of time).
