Hashtags Are Taking on a New Meaning

Recently, platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram have made it known to their users that hashtags don't serve a purpose when it comes to post reach. While they can put your content in front of certain communities, they won't necessarily push the content in front of the audience you want.

If that's the case, hashtags aren't really necessary right now. Threads may be changing that, though.

You may recall that when Threads launched, hashtags were suspiciously absent. For a Twitter-clone, that was surprising. In November, they added their current "tagging" system, which is essentially like hashtags but without the actual # symbol. Not to mention, posts were limited to one tag each.

Now, it looks like the humble "#" may be finally coming to Threads.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has announced that they have been testing a new way to use hashtags to drive more engagement on the platform. As of now, it is in the testing stage, and no other details have been released about what we can expect.

This seems like something that should have been done a while ago, considering social media has been pushing hashtags for years, but hopefully, this revamp will make them more effective and useful.
