#HASHTAG TRENDING - 8.5.24
HI and welcome to #HashtagTrending! No matter where you're logging in from, your feeds have probably been filled with Olympics content since the Opening Ceremonies on July 26th. From the memes, the Snoop Dogg appearances, and the controversies, it seems that everyone's attention is on all things Olympics.
But before we jump into the latest trends and platform updates, I wanted to talk about one more thing today: Just two weeks after Biden announced that he was pulling out of the 2024 Presidential race, people are already saying that Kamala Harris's social marketing campaign is "masterclass". How? It seems that Harris's team are listening to how she is being talked about in social media and leveraging that. From the organic movement featuring fan edits of Harris set to Charli XCX and Chappell Roan's songs (and of course, Charli XCX's own announcement) that led to the campaign embracing the Brat green on its social accounts to the coconut tree quote that was going viral before it was embraced by the campaign and to using trending audio to fundraise or call out her competition, Harris's campaign has jumped on the right trends at exactly the right time, among on audience who are experiencing election fatigue right now. The result: 3M views and 650k followers in the first 3 hours of being on TikTok. While the social marketing campaign has certainly launched with a bang, we're excited to see if it can sustain momentum through November.
Okay now let's dive into the trends:
When the memes are their own sport entirely:
When it's RushTok time:

?? Threads announced they have hit 200 million monthly active users. They are also testing new topic discovery options and rolling out a blue label above posts that are related to a trending topic.
?? Instagram is testing a new home for the DM button, swapping it out with the Create Post button. They are also testing the ability to lock and hide DMs and block new comments from a specific account (instead of just blocking the account itself).
? An Instagram glitch causes some users to lose photos that were permanently deleted from Stories archives.
?? TikTok has launched an Olympics hub in the app including a medal count.
?? LinkedIn now allows you to save posts on the main post menu.
?? Reddit may start to rank lower in some search engine results as it has mandated that search engines pay to index it's content. Google is the only search engine currently paying for access.
??? TikTok now allows accounts to upload custom thumbnail images for clips and many social media managers are rushing to update older posts with custom thumbnails.
?? TikTok has also launched the ability to search for songs by singing or humming them.
?? A social media managers delight/nightmare, Facebook now allows accounts to edit Reels after they've been posted.
That's it, that's all! Unless you have any tips about how I can watch the women's Olympic marathon on Sunday at 2am EST. Are we team "stay up til 4:30am when the race finishes" or do I go to bed and wake up to watch it?
See ya in 2 weeks!
