Has your workplace put on a summer party? If not, why not?

Why should December have all the fun? Summer is a brilliant time for an employee social event: long days, warm sun, and good vibes all around. Keep reading to find out why you should have a summer work party, things to keep in mind when planning and some event ideas to get you started!

Benefits of work parties

People call them get-togethers for a reason: socials are a great way to bring employees from different parts of the business together. Sure, you might bump into each other in the kitchen or have a chat online, but nothing beats bringing the team together to simply enjoy each others’ company! Giving people the chance to socialize also supports employees’ well-being by helping them feel more connected to one another and releasing feel-good hormones.?

Taking time out can also be good for your bottom line in the long run. Studies have shown that fun enhances creativity, so letting loose and laughing together might actually help people be more effective at work. And speaking of jobs well done, work socials are the perfect place to publicly recognise people for their hard work.

Things to consider

So you want to have a summer work party: what now? Before you start planning the event, consider the following:?

Is the party only for the team or are partners and families invited?

Inviting workers’ families can be a great way to extend your appreciation and help people break out of ‘work mode’ and relax. Before you book your date, check if there are any school holidays that could impact families’ availability. You should also get in touch with your health and safety representative to do a risk assessment and to be sure you understand your responsibilities for guests’ safety. Finally, consider families’ accessibility needs when picking both venue and activities so that everyone feels truly welcome.

Will you shut down for the party?

Closing down the office for a party sends a clear message that your whole team is important to you and makes it easier for everyone to attend. If you choose to shut down, you’ll need to let your clients and customers know in advance. This might have the added benefit of giving you a reputational boost because customers are increasingly concerned with socially responsible working practices. A total shutdown makes it clear to everyone that you value your team’s hard work and well-being.?

That said, not every organization has the ability to fully close for a day, or even an hour. It’s never nice to be stuck at work while everyone else is off having fun, so try to find a way to say ‘thank you’ on the day of the event. You might provide a nice catered lunch, treat bags, or even spa vouchers. And of course, provide time off in lieu for fairness’ sake.

Party Ideas

The best idea for your summer employee social is the one that fits your team and budget. Here are some suggestions to get you started!

  • Have a potluck to create a family dinner feeling. Provide drinks and mains and ask everyone to bring a side or dessert (with allergens clearly labelled). Give a prize for the best dishes.
  • Hire ice cream and food trucks for an easy lunchtime social. Extend the lunch break to a couple of hours if you can. Have a raffle or tombola with a mix of silly prizes and bigger ticket items like a hotel stay.
  • Host a barbeque. Rent out a pavilion, recruit your best cooks or hire in pros, and lay on a classic spread. Bring footballs, croquet sets, soap bubbles, and other fun and low-key activities. This is a great event for families and partners to attend!
  • Go to the park for an office Olympics. Plan a mix of activities including physical (five-a-side football), mental (giant checkers), and downright silly (egg and spoon race). Provide cheap and cheerful eats and end the day with an awards ceremony complete with chocolate medals.
  • Volunteer together. Find the right opportunity for your team online. You could spend a day sprucing up a school or community center, sorting donations at a food bank, or cleaning local waterways.?

Whatever type of work party you decide on, the most important component is your sincere ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ to your hardworking employees.?
