Being slightly knowledgeable on the subject of leadership and the many different leadership styles such as transactional, situational, and transformational to name a few, I thought it worth sharing my thoughts on Servant leadership and why it’s crucial for organisations to identify the disciples of this leadership style, because in my humble opinion, they are worth their weight in gold!
Now before we carry on and find out more about the pot of gold in your organisation, I would like to say that I’m a great believer in a growing philosophy that leaders who are passionate about improving their leadership continually evolve as a leader.
What I mean by this statement is:
As you learn, totally understand, practice, and go through the main styles of leadership journey, you eventually get to what I call the ''Valhalla'' of a leaders journey, which for me is becoming a servant leader and giving back to others by mentoring, respecting, empowering, developing, and encouraging others to be the best they can be without asking for anything in return except for the rich intangible rewards that money can’t buy, and the immense buzz of proudness and satisfaction when you see them succeed.
Now let’s put this into an organisational perspective, have you noticed the intrinsic link between CEOs that are servant leaders, often transforming the people, profits, and culture of an organisation (yes, I can quote many studies and examples past & present demonstrating this).
I mentioned CEOs, and rightly so, as they have the potential ability to transform organisations, however, we must not forget that there are also many other servant leaders at lower levels than the CEO in many organisations around the world who devote themselves to helping, mentoring, encouraging, empowering, and supporting others in an organisation.
Although they may not have had formal leadership training across all the styles of Leadership (not just one style) they have inherited a natural ability to emulate a servant leader and play a significant role in directly and indirectly, influencing the culture, people, and profits of an organisation.
When you look at the context of the above synopsis, you suddenly realise these unconsciously competent servant leaders are worth their weight in gold to an organisation, as I like to say, the silent influencers within a business.?
The challenge that a lot of organisations often face is that most performance appraisals, and emerging talent programs don’t go into the depth of leadership and influence a person has on the organisation from a servant leadership perspective, and tend to look at the individual competencies, behaviours and performance output.
Perhaps a question every organisation should attempt to solve is how to spot a servant leader in your organisation, and importantly, how to create support mechanisms and mentoring environments to help them foster a culture of serving others better.
Yes, it would mean getting a deep understanding the different leadership styles, (not just one that contradicts the natural ability and DNA of the gifted individual) and building programs on how to spot and develop a servant leader in your organisation.
After all, developing a servant leader that's worth their weight in gold would bring an immeasurable amount of tangible and intangible benefits for your organisation??
