Hey, Fellow Breadwinners!
You’re out there hustling making that dough, bringing home the bacon. But what happens when that dough goes stale?
Listen, it happens, and as business owners, we need to talk about it. It doesn’t mean your product is garbage. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It just means your business is alive. It’s growing and evolving just like every living thing on the planet.
Just because something worked once doesn’t mean it will work forever. Set it and forget it vibes are for crockpots, not thriving businesses.
So how do you know if something’s gone stale?
Looking back helps us move forward with more power and success. Here are four questions to ask yourself to make sure you’re getting the right information to make the right changes for your business’s future.
1. What worked vs. what didn’t?
Even if you’re not getting the sales you hoped for, there is something about the process that worked. Did you discover that you love the act of pitching? Did you discover you KILL it in collaborative partnerships? Did people talk about your product? From start to finish, make a list of what worked. Once you’ve focused on the positive, then you can make a list of what didn’t work. But don’t dwell on that, y’all. We’re here to keep it moving!?
P.S. If something used to work, but doesn’t now, get curious! You might learn a lot by looking at the potential reasons why!
2. Has your audience changed?
I am telling you, this HAPPENS. You launch a service for one demographic and discover that it actually lands better with a completely different audience. Maybe you got a sweet gig in a surprising business sector and now your audience has diversified. If you’re not experiencing the results you hope to, consider if your audience has changed and what that means for you moving forward. Sometimes it’s also time to expand. If your audience hasn’t ever changed, it might be time to stretch yourself and keep it fresh!

3. Have YOU changed?
LISTEN. No one talks about this. You are a business owner, executive, educator, college student. And you are constantly changing. Now, hear me out. Consistency is queen. You can’t be changing and rebranding your business and your offerings as frequently as you change your clothes. But you also shouldn’t stay committed to something that doesn’t feel like you anymore. If your life stage has changed, you’ve learned something crucial about your strengths, or you realize that a certain approach no longer feels authentic, reconsider things. Customers can tell when you’re not in it anymore.
4. Does your branding or approach need to change?
Based on the answers to the previous questions, you need to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself the big question. Does your branding or approach need to change? If people aren’t resonating like they used to, it might be time for a makeover. Get specific about what changes you want to make and why. And then, fire away!
You have a PULSE on your corner of the market. Trust it. If you’re wondering if your business has gone stale, chances are it has. And that is EXCITING! Why? Because you can CHANGE it!
