Six Sigma came into existence as an American frustration for the success of Japanese products; no doubt about this. However it has been successful in harnessing the skills required at various levels of the organization; from the grass root/executive level (where the action is and which generates the data) to middle/managerial level which has pressure for managing and leading various projects to the top/leadership level which sets the vision and provide direction.
If we see at micro level, a good six sigma project manifests following key skills;
1. Strategic Planning skills
a. Analysing and evaluating business plans
b. Analysing and evaluating VoC (voice of customer)
c. Goal setting
d. Decision making
2. Project Management Skills
a. Organizing
b. Team management
c. Risk analysis
d. Feasibility Study
3. Problem solving & Data Analysis
a. Collecting, Organizing & presenting data (graphs, tables, basic statistics)
b. Application of QC tools
c. Experiments, sampling, statistical analysis and drawing inferences
4. Soft skills
a. Business Communication (report writing, making presentation)
b. Interpersonal skill /Working in Team/Managing Team
5. Computer skills
a. Ms Excel
b. MINTAB
c. SPSS
d. Simulation tools
The only key thing is you need a right mentor, who is not only telling what is sigma but walking along with your journey for the desired result.

6 年At MD level only result matters...there is no need to understand Six sigma at that level...their job is to set the goals/raise the bar..... have an eye for talent and building a high performance team...providing resources.......taking periodic reviews..... rewarding the performers... training/retraining for skill gaps...

6 年Six Sigma methodology is very strong and promising but problem is with people who assumes it a magic stick and OPEX head a magician who will just blow some MANTRAS and 3.4 PPM shall be achieved. A lot of hindrance is created by negative minded people who are proud of staying in same organization for a long time. Also, business leaders like MD / Directors / CXOs are lacking understanding of SS and therefore asking for the guy from same domain. All these factors have collectively killed the essence of excellence in India..
