Has Rebellion started yet?

I asked my teenager why he didn’t enroll himself for competitive test at school, which I thought would have benefitted him. He coolly said that he didn’t enroll because he is not interested in pursuing that subject and so didn’t see the need to write the test! I had not expected that level of clarity in taking his decision. I was still expecting him to follow my decision for him like before!!
Navigating the fine line between giving my teenager freedom and holding on to a semblance of parental control feels like trying to ride a unicycle while juggling flaming bowling pins—utterly precarious. It's a constant negotiation where I attempt to be the cool parent, but my attempts often result in a spectacular parental disaster. I find myself playing the role of a wise sage in the background, offering guidance like a GPS that insists on recalculating when the teenager decides to take the scenic route of rebellion.
In this wonderful drama of parenting, my authority is like the spectator who claps & comments. I'm not sure if it's genuinely adding to the drama going on. It's a daily drama with unpredictable plot twists, where my attempts at being the director often feel more like improvisational comedy. As I tiptoe through the minefield of teenage autonomy, I can't help but wonder if my parenting strategy should come with a "Handle with Care: Teenager Inside" warning label. After all, who knew being a parent would involve so much circus acrobatics?
