Has The Population in Nigeria Contributed To The Present High Level Of Poverty?

Nigeria’s unchecked population growth over decades has contributed to the crisis of unemployment and poverty. The geometric growth of uneducated and unskilled youth in an already stressed and unproductive economic environment has negative implications for both economy and security. This is already evident in some parts of the country. The population crisis has gone on for too long because of a lack of political will to address it, flowing from sensitivities around culture, religion and politics.?

Those were the exact words of? Mr? Kingsley Moghalu who is a former deputy CBN governor while giving a speech on the way forward for Nigeria at a recent event.?

No doubt we are the most populous country in Africa with over 222 million people. This population is growing at an exponential rate but Harnessing the potential of the youth is possible if the right measures are taken, otherwise, the country's problems could grow worse.

UNICEF has it that there are more than 65 million people in Nigeria that are between the ages of 10 and 24.?

The annual growth is 2.4%, which is an additional five million people in the population pool each year.?

Nigeria's fertility rate stands at 5.1 children per woman, compared with the global rate of 2.4 births per woman.? According to UN estimates, Nigeria's total population will double from 200 million to more than 401 million by 2050. If the trend isn't stopped, it will exceed 728 million by 2100.

Nigeria's difficulties, which range from acute poverty to political instability, will increase if population growth remains out of control.

According to The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s unemployment rate grew in the third quarter of 2023 to 5.0 percent.

Accurate census data is lacking as the last time we But the country has a high population growth rate at 2.4%, which is sustained by high fertility at about 5.2 children per woman compared with 3.6 in Ghana and 3.3 in Kenya. Most of these births are unplanned, unwanted and burdensome to the mothers. In many cases, most of these unwanted pregnancies are from unmarried adolescents and young people. The consequences are huge in terms of unsafe abortion, poor maternal and health outcomes.

The overall quality of life for the population is of concern. There are high levels of poverty, unemployment and insecurity – of food, lives and property. Nearly 12% of the world population in extreme poverty lives in Nigeria, as measured by a poverty threshold at US$1.90 a day.

On MarketSquare recently, Veegil Econs and Mr Henry Olonimoyo took at a look at all the sides of the population idea as recommended.?
