Has Lead Generation Stopped Working? IMPORTANT
Dear Entrepreneur,
I’ve noticed recently that several people have asked me if there’s a ‘problem’ with lead generation. Does it still work? Why is my lead generation not doing as well as it should? Etc.
They’re asking because they’re seeing either a dip in their results – or in some cases a collapse in their results.
The answer to all the questions is ‘Yes.’ It does still work – but there is a problem.
Actually there are several problems.
Lead generation (and generating sales in general) are being hit badly by three factors:
1 Mobile is causing havoc with lead generation and online sales. In many cases, 50% of your traffic will be viewing your message on mobile. People respond differently on mobile – very differently. The old ways of capturing a lead just don’t work. So if you carry on doing what you were doing a year ago, your sales and profits will suffer.
2 Distraction. Partly because of mobile, partly because of other factors, our customers are horribly distracted. Frankly, until a year or two ago, if you could write half decent copy, it was easy to keep peoples’ attention for a few minutes – long enough to capture the lead or the sale. But these days, nice copy just doesn’t seem to be enough. If you don’t hook them in the first 10 seconds, you’ve got a big problem. We finally solved this in my business but it took about 20 tests to get there – and it’s not easy.
3 Video. Online Video is a double edged sword. In many ways it’s the answer to the two problems above – and we’re seeing great results with it, particularly on mobile – but the flip slide is that pages without video are starting to see disastrous results. In some markets, the customer just won’t respond if there’s not a video. The other problem is that just sticking a video on a page doesn’t work any more either (it used to because it was so different to what everyone else was doing) My current main video to sell to new customers is the twenty sixth version we’ve produced. Why? Because the other 25 either didn’t work in the first place or eventually the performance dropped as mobile took off. Doing video right is turning into a very precise and sophisticated art which, frankly, very few people get.
This message is the first time I’ve discussed this publicly. I didn’t really want to get into it until we had solved these issues our end in our own business and with the businesses I work with privately. My message is that you do need to tackle these issues and I would suggest you need to tackle them urgently.
You will have seen messages recently about the Summit I am doing with Dan Kennedy at the end of September. On the surface, this may look like an optional fun event, in the splendor of Downton Abbey etc. It is actually a very serious and urgent exploration into what is required to succeed in the new economy and tackle the challenges above.

The good news is, we do have the answer. It’s not a single, simple answer. It’s a complete approach to marketing and online marketing that is very different from what was working, even a year or two ago.
I can’t take all the credit for the solutions to these problems because Dan’s genius played a big part. I can tell you the results are brilliant. They will give you the foundation to move forward over the next five years with the certainty you need about new customer acquisition. And you don’t need me to tell you that without new customers, we have no financial future
