This pandemic has affected people in many different ways. We have all suffered one way or another and some more than others. Some have achieved making the most out of a negative situation by improving their lifestyle and career choices.
The governments Furlough scheme has inspired people to rethink their careers, but this window of opportunity is about to shut down as we come out of lockdown. As an MD of a recruitment business with over 19 years' experience in the digital media market, I have witnessed hundreds of candidates making career changes; either they want to give something back, move to the suburbs or even emigrate. Media friends have done everything from setting up businesses in fine dining Mark Griffiths | LinkedIn woodfire Ltd or manufacturing products for the children's sector Joel Rémy | LinkedIn Founder of Bamboo Bamboo. Both very successful , Well done !
Unfortunately many career changes are also created from a fast thinking or a panicked approach and do not necessarily work out. The grass often ends up not being as green as one had imagined on the other side. Giving up a good income, moving industries and taking pay cuts can become increasingly difficult the older you become whether due to personal, financial or family commitments.
With the Furlough scheme, people were able to legally and actively start working on their ideal business propositions which would have been prevented under a ‘normal’ situation without the risk factor of losing their jobs or a salary. You also have the freedom to move around within the digital media industry. A Salesperson who wants to try Ad Ops or an Ad Ops person who wants to move into Sales for example. Finding out what suitable career choices you can delve into until you are content without feeling like you’re gambling your life away can be a huge strain on your mental health.
Should your new business direction take a wrong turn and not come into fruition, you still have the option to promote other entrepreneurial concepts that you are passionate about before being un-furloughed. Why not try a career in the Charity, Government, Childcare, Entertainment, Music or even opening a Pub! Always follow your dreams... but do have a back-up plan in place.
Furloughed or not, Moriati is always available for career advice, mentoring, client support and recruiting at all levels from CEO to entry level. We help steer candidates and clients in the right direction. Like many businesses, we go through our highs and lows, but have emerged from the fog stronger and more determined. Good luck to all those who are taking the leap to venture out on their own, we know you can do it!
