Inspired by the brilliant show Potted Potter (who condense all seven Harry Potter books into seventy minutes) today we decided to condense the life and work of Harry Potter into 7 job adverts - Clever huh!
Enjoy our creative efforts below and if any resonates let me know or apply on any of the major UK job boards!
Book1
The Philosophers Control System
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207550720/Junior-Control-Systems-Engineer?hlkw=Control-Systems-Engineer)
You're sat at home (ideally not living in a cupboard under the stairs) keen to get out into the world and make your mark. Your family don’t understand the wizardry you can do, and you need to be in an environment where that’s appreciated.
Luckily for you Hagrid comes along and helps you find your way (pretty sure that makes me Hagrid – I’ll decide if I’m happy with that later).
From here life goes well. You make new friends that share your working interests, you’ve learnt to play quidditch*, and you’ve living in some of the finest scenery you’ve known.
Things won’t always be easy though. There is a whole host of programming languages to learn, sites to visit, and Electrical design drawings to get your head around. However, on a positive note there isn’t a three-headed dog!
No doubt towards the end of that first year they’ll be a challenge. You’ll have a tough project and it will be up to you and your fellow engineers to deliver that project. However, once it gets to the end you’re on your own… that final stage of commissioning is all on you and you’ll be responsible for getting that project live.
Good news though – you do deliver that project and you’re recognised by Dumbledore for your first-year service with a pay rise! Not bad for your first year in Control Systems.
If this sounds like a story you’d like to be part of and/or you’re Daniel Radcliffe give me a call or apply today telling me how your PLC Control Systems degree makes you the next big thing in the wizarding world.
*You may or may not end up playing quidditch
Book 2
Chamber of Secrets
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207550790/Control-Systems-Service-Engineer?hlkw=Control-Systems-service-engineer)
Your second year at Hogwarts is an eventful and challenging one. You’ve more wizardry tasks to balance than ever before, between travelling to various customer sites, to applying all your PLC knowledge learnt from the professor of dark arts to magically upgrading and modifying PLC’s. Your days are nothing if not interesting.
As the school year progresses, a mysterious voice you’re hearing becomes more and more menacing, and soon you’re communicating daily with the sales and delivery teams. You finally understand that you’re a Parslemouth and you can speak and communicate with customers.
You’re the Slytherin Heir and according to the legend you should be able to write service reports and attend client meetings in order to access the Chamber of Secrets and release the monster within.
It’s an exciting time for you Harry, will you take you opportunities and fulfil your destiny? The destiny James and Lily sacrificed their lives for.
Book 3
Prisoner of Azkaban
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207550915/Control-Systems-Engineer-PLC-SCADA?hlkw=control-systems-engineer)
So here we are Year 3! You’ve overcome that difficult learning filled first year, realised you can speaking a whole variety of languages you didn’t know you could (ladder diagram, Structured text, Parslemouth etc).
Maybe you’ve made a few mistakes along the way (hopefully not blowing up your Aunt Marge) but the company doesn’t mind – it’s all part of the learning process.
Then something weird happened. You’re told to stay away from that mysterious engineer Sirius Black – he spends too much time on SCADA, MES and all that weird and wonderful networking.
Here it’s all about learning who you can trust and developing your career to the next level! Avoid the rats who turn out to be not the friendly person you thought they were and you’ll soon discover that the engineer you were told in your old company to stay away from because “you don’t need to learn that stuff” or “he’s our expert on that – you do the boring stuff” becomes a key support.
Why stick to doing the same old boring projects when you can further your career working on some exciting projects and new technologies.
Book 4
Goblet of Fire
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207550969/Automation-Project-Engineer-PLC-SCADA?hlkw=automation-project-engineer)
Now we’re talking, it’s Quidditch world cup time, however just like the Football world cup the home nations disappoint. Equally even though people are concerned about the safety of the Russian World cup at least we won’t have to worry about death eaters!
And the competition keeps on going from there – the Triwizard Tournament. There is a massive project to be bid on – one of the world’s most prominently known drinks manufacturers needs a new Automated factory delivered.
Your company is up against 2 others bidding to show they’re the ones that should be delivering the project and providing their all new Control System.
Luckily this time you only have to undertake site surveys, design architecture and manage the subcontractors rather than having to steal a golden eye from a dragon (although the end client has been compared to a dragon for their ability to spew fire!).
Like the previous 3 books, its never easy (you’re sensing a trend here) and at times it may look like the project is lost, timescales are slipping, or the design just isn’t possible but somehow your unbelievable engineering skills save the day.
Now if that sounds like you and you fancy proving yourself to the (Wizarding) world then apply today.
Book 5
Order of Phoenix
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207551010/Control-Systems-Technical-Lead?hlkw=technical-lead-control-systems)
It was all going so well for you – You’d had a summer break, you were now a trusted senior/lead Control Systems engineer but then it all goes wrong.
Firstly, Hagrid’s gone (which concerns me considering I decided in the first book that I was Hagrid) and your new boss, the defence against the dark arts teacher as they are better known is a complete pain!
You often come home from work frustrated. You’ve now got so much experience and knowledge to share with others that you’re fed up the career progression isn’t there! You can do stuff with Control Systems that others can only dream of.
Now you need to be leading a team and managing others from a technical perspective. But don’t worry you don’t need to form a secret group!
Unfortunately for you it’s time to step up and take responsibility from Sirius and become the new face of the company and the new Technical Lead for Control Systems.
Book 6
Half blood Prince
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207551019/Controls-Design-Engineer?hlkw=controls-design-engineer)
The death of Sirius Black has left an indelible mark and now you’re more determined than ever to put end to the feud between you current career and the opportunities that lay before you. You’re happy Dumbledore has come to collect you from the tyranny of your current role and you’re looking forward to your next adventure. Dumbledore’s lessons have prepared you for your next battle with Eplan. He hopes that you will be able to conquer it and finally end the battle with dark sources.
A book of potions and spells on electrical design came into your hands so you’re well informed and now you’re able to create schematic drawings ‘with your eyes closed’. Hermione isn’t so impressed as this is her forte. You utilise the knowledge acquired from the potion book on special purpose machinery you may not have come across before. Heck, the spells are so good you’re able to tackle military bomb disposal projects.
As this year progresses and nears an end your love life blossoms and you develop feelings for Gin-PLC-ny. You can’t help it, everything about them entices you. This an opportunity that can’t be missed? Pursuing a life to engage with Gin-PLC-ny and expand on your current knowledge base.
Book 7
The Half Blood Prince
(https://www.cv-library.co.uk/job/207551037/Control-Systems-Manager?hlkw=control-systems-manager)
This is it – the culmination of the books and now your career – that long, hardworking career within Control Systems/Automation has led to this point and also to two films, which to me seemed an excuse to make double the box office takings, but hey I’m getting off topic here.
The challenge here is remembering all you were taught from the likes of Dumbledore and Sirius black amongst others while keeping up to date with modern technology, broomsticks and potions.
In a job of this seniority there will be pressure and your decisions will affect the direction of the company and the career paths of Wizards working for you.
Some may disagree with your decisions (I’m looking at you Ron!) but you have the faith and the experience to stick with your decisions for the good of the company.
It’s at this stage that all your experience comes together. That difficult overseas project, the bespoke pharmaceutical challenge you had 10 years ago and that client that wanted everything for nothing.
However along with being a technical wizard you’re also a fantastic manager of people and superb at client/candidate relationships. You will put their best interests at heart and do whatever it takes to support the business and its employees/candidates (Although there is no climatic meeting with Dumbledore to give you all the answers. You’ll have to go on wondering why round pizza comes in a square box and why elderly people are called old people, but children are never called new people)
