Harris’s brand of economic populism
Happy DNC week and welcome to the US election countdown! I'm Steff Chávez, the FT's Washington reporter. Today let’s talk about:
Kamala Harris has fired off her first economic policy proposals in recent days, as she tries to ease voter concerns over the cost of living, rather than reimagining the entire economy à la Joe Biden (industrial sector) or Barack Obama (healthcare).??
She is keeping her pitches in line with the Biden administration’s broad agenda, but repackaging them into her own populist offerings that she will hope to wield against Donald Trump [free to read].?
Harris has proposed:
The vice-president has corporate America in her sights, aiming to bring relief to the middle class by having big business pay for fanning high inflation.
But her plans are raising eyebrows, especially among economists, and have even put Democrats on the defensive. . . . Register for the FT to keep reading the newsletter for free.

6 个月In my opinion, the article has a slightly shifted emphasis, the election rhetoric of a presidential candidate in America is one thing, and the real economic policy (and even economic strategy, if any) of the inaugurated President of the United States of America is another. Again, in my opinion, Kamala Harris's election rhetoric is certainly focused primarily on the interests of the middle class. But even now, in the pro-Republican expert community, work is underway to form an economic concept and a legal package aimed at creating conditions for the transition to a new technological order and taking into account the interests of major economic and financial players as guarantors of stability and the basis for America's global influence. Kamala Harris is the Leader of modern America and evidence that Heaven protects America.

6 个月The housing proposals are good, not populists at all. The rest seems less organic and the efficacy is to be verified. Putting the middle class needs at the center is a correct move though.
