Harnessing the Power of Values: Transform Your Work and Life

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking video about the transformative power of Values in our lives. It was a revelation, as I had never deeply considered their impact, given that they work at a subconscious level. However, as I began to explore this concept, I realised that almost all of my decisions are value-influenced. For instance, early in my career, I faced a dilemma when a senior colleague asked me to cover up a mistake. The choice between preserving my integrity and fearing the consequences of honesty was tough, but I chose the latter. This decision, though challenging, solidified my commitment to honesty and transparency. It was a defining moment that set the course for my professional journey, with many more such moments to follow.

Values are the cornerstone of our identity and behaviour - they guide our decisions, shape our actions, and influence our interactions.

Understanding Values - Values are principles influenced by upbringing, culture, experiences, and interactions. They are not static and can evolve.

Building Values:

  1. Family and Upbringing: Early influences from family shape our core beliefs.
  2. Education and Mentorship: Schools and mentors reinforce values through guidance and example.
  3. Personal Experiences: Life experiences teach essential lessons that shape our principles.
  4. Cultural and Societal Influences: Traditions and social norms mould our value system.?

Identifying Your Core Values:?

Understanding your core values is the first step in harnessing their power. Here is how you can start:

  1. Reflect on Past Experiences: Consider moments in your career when you felt most fulfilled and proud. What values were at play?
  2. Assess Your Reactions: Think about times you felt uncomfortable or conflicted at work. Which values were compromised?
  3. Identify what Inspires You: Consider qualities in people you admire. What resonates?
  4. Seek Feedback: Ask trusted colleagues or mentors to share their perceptions of your strengths and principles.
  5. Assess Your Priorities: Look at how you spend your time and energy. What drains you and what uplifts you?
  6. Leverage: the values list and external tools such as - Personal Values Assessment , The Values App ; VIA Character strengths ; Life Values Inventory (try them, the results may surprise you).?

The Impact of Values on Work

  1. Decision-Making: Values guide ethical decisions.
  2. Leadership and Trust: Consistent values build trust and respect.
  3. Workplace Culture: Shared values foster a positive culture.
  4. Personal Fulfillment and Motivation: Alignment with values brings fulfillment.

For example, if "Respect" is one of your core values, you will display it from the security guard to the CEO. Have you observed that? I have Freedom and creativity (innovation); hence, autonomy, trying new things, learning, and curiosity is something I feel driven to do.

The Impact of Values on Life

  1. Personal Relationships: Values influence the strength and endurance of relationships.
  2. Sense of Purpose: Values provide direction and purpose.
  3. Resilience and Adaptability: Values help face challenges with resilience.
  4. Ethical Living: Values encourage ethical behaviour and decision-making.

Do Values Change Based on Circumstances?

Values can evolve, influenced by new experiences and circumstances. The core values often stay constant, but their expression may change.?

Handling Conflicts Between Your Values and Real-Life Situations

Understanding your values and drawing boundaries is essential; otherwise, operating with conflicting values may become challenging. When faced with such conflicts, it's critical to:

  1. Prioritise Your Values: Balance conflicting values.
  2. Communicate Openly: Discuss conflicts with relevant stakeholders.
  3. Seek Support: Get perspectives from mentors or coaches.
  4. Reflect and Learn: Use conflicts as learning experiences.?

Conclusion

Values shape who we are and how we interact with the world. They guide our decisions, enhance relationships, and provide purpose. Understanding and embracing our core values leads to a more meaningful and impactful life, strengthening our connections with others and fostering a sense of understanding and empathy.
