This past weekend I fulfilled a promise made last Summer to my children – to hike with them up to a Swiss Alpine Club ‘Alpehutte ’ in the mountains, stay the night and then hike back the following day.? Maybe not Everest, but with an 11- and 8-year old far enough [& high enough] to be a challenge; and time away from the day-to-day to get some perspective and reflect on the year so far.
In our fast-paced world, taking time to pause and reflect can seem like a luxury we can't afford. However, according to recent insights from Harvard Business Review , the practice of self-reflection is not just a personal benefit but a crucial leadership tool that can significantly enhance our effectiveness & empathy as leaders.
Self-reflection involves more than just reviewing past actions; it's about deeply understanding our own motivations, behaviours, and emotional responses. ?This process can reveal valuable insights into our strengths and areas for improvement, helping us grow both personally and professionally.
The Power of Self-Reflection
Enhancing Self-Awareness: Self-reflection allows leaders to gain a clearer understanding of their own values, biases, and assumptions. ?This heightened self-awareness is crucial for making more informed and balanced decisions. When we know ourselves better, we can navigate complex situations with greater clarity and purpose.
Improving Empathy: By reflecting on our interactions and responses, we develop a deeper empathy for others. ?Understanding our own reactions and emotions enables us to better appreciate the perspectives and feelings of those we lead. ?This empathy fosters stronger relationships and a more inclusive workplace culture.
Boosting Decision-Making: Regular reflection helps identify patterns and trends in our decision-making processes. ?It allows us to learn from past experiences, avoiding the repetition of mistakes and enhances our strategic thinking. ?Leaders who engage in self-reflection are more adept at anticipating challenges and seizing opportunities.
Promoting Personal Growth: Self-reflection is a catalyst for continuous learning. ?It encourages us to set personal and professional goals, seek feedback, and embrace new experiences. ?This ongoing growth journey not only improves our leadership skills but also inspires & motivates our teams.
Incorporating Reflection into Your Routine
To harness the benefits of self-reflection, consider integrating these practices into your leadership routine:
领英推荐
Schedule Regular Check-Ins:? Allocate dedicated time each week or month to reflect on your experiences, challenges, and successes. ?Use this time to assess your progress and adjust your strategies as needed.
Seek Feedback:? Engage with mentors, peers, and team members to gain diverse perspectives on your leadership style and effectiveness. ?Constructive feedback can provide valuable insights for personal growth.
Write it down: ?Keep a notebook or journal to document your thoughts, reflections, and lessons learned. ??Writing can clarify your thinking and help track your development over time.
Practice Mindfulness: ?Take time to breath!? Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing can enhance self-awareness and reduce stress. ?These practices can help create calmness and mental space for deeper reflection.
As leaders, we often prioritize action and results, but taking the time to reflect can be equally powerful. ?Embracing self-reflection not only strengthens our leadership capabilities but also fosters a more empathetic and understanding approach to leading others. ?By committing to this practice, we set ourselves—and our teams—on a path to greater success and fulfilment.
It doesn’t matter how you do it – hike up a mountain, ride your bike, yoga, read a book – do whatever works for you.? But let's make reflection a regular part of our leadership journey and witness the transformative impact it can have.

Yes! Love this article Chris Easton and very timely during times of change, and leadership stress! Making time and encouraging self reflection, empathy and considered leadership is much needed in these trying and exciting times. Witnessing too many fear based decisions and reactivity impacting business and culture. But there is another way :) Looking forward to what you share next

2 个月Sounds like you all had a wonderful summer Chris Easton . It’s amazing what we learn in observing, and in spending time, with our children. Self-reflection is a regular part of my week, and I couldn’t be without it! Wish I had done more of it earlier in my career tbh. Thanks for sharing.
