Harnessing the power of psychology

Have you ever wondered what makes a website or app engaging and satisfying? The answer lies in the fascinating world of psychology. By understanding human behavior and applying psychological knowledge to UX, we can design digital experiences that meet and delight users' needs. What do they have in common?

In our interactions with a psychologist in a therapy session or a UX professional conducting user research, specific phrases may sound familiar: "And how does that make you feel?" or "Is there anything else you would like to share?"?

“These phrases are a tiny and illustrative example of how Psychology and UX have things in common.”

Understanding the convergence

The common thread between these two disciplines is their focus on people.

“Psychologists work with and for their patients, and UX professionals work with and for their users. Therefore, knowing how to apply some psychological principles to UX is valuable and enriching.”

Defining the disciplines

“UX is the discipline that considers the aspects that define our experience as users of products and services (digital or not). Psychology is the discipline that studies our behavior and mental processes.”

Cognitive load: simplifying choices

Psychologists introduced cognitive load to describe the mental effort needed to learn something new.?

“In UX, we can reduce the number of choices presented to users in the flows and wireframes we design, and when we test these designs, we should consider the amount of time it takes to process the information and perform tasks.”

Perception: organizing information

Gestalt, which means 'shape' in German, is a psychological approach to UX that describes how people group similar elements, recognize patterns, and simplify complex images. By working with elements like buttons, cards, or banners, we gain insight into how users interpret our designs.

“In UX, understanding how information and content are organized can help convey the message we want to users and simplify their understanding.”

Motivation: facilitating user interaction

Understanding the dynamics of motivation, ability, and triggers, as defined by BJ Fogg, can help us create user-friendly interfaces.?

“We can facilitate user interaction with our UI by offering resources necessary to carry out desired actions, such as noticeable and accessible CTAs (call-to-action).”

Bringing Psychology and UX Together

Incorporating psychological principles into UX allows us to create more user-friendly, intuitive, and satisfying products and services.?

“By applying psychological knowledge to UX, we open the door to a more user-centered approach oriented towards the success of our stakeholders (users included)!”
