This holds especially true for Faith and Community-Based Organisations (FCBOs), which play an indispensable role in advancing societal well-being. FCBOs share a common goal despite their diversity in structure, values, and mission: to address critical issues such as poverty, human rights, and community development.

In the United Kingdom, faith-based charities comprise over a quarter of all charitable organisations, and nearly half of the charities engaged in overseas aid and human rights advocacy are faith-driven. While their potential for positive impact is immense, many FCBOs face significant challenges in securing the resources necessary to broaden their reach and deepen their impact.

The Essential Role of Donations for FCBOs

Donors and donations form the foundation of not-for-profit organisations, and FCBOs are no exception. However, many FCBOs struggle to raise funds effectively due to several barriers. Limited knowledge, skills, and resources for fundraising often hinder their efforts. Additionally, some faith-based organisations perceive active fundraising as contrary to their belief systems or worry about reputational risks and alienating their followers, who may prefer voluntary, unprompted contributions.

These challenges are further compounded in rural, remote, and conflict-affected regions where FCBOs frequently operate. In such areas, access to training and capacity-building opportunities is scarce, leaving organisations ill-equipped to address issues like poverty, injustice, and inequality on a larger scale.

Their grassroots presence ensures they can respond quickly and effectively to changing circumstances, often outperforming other sectors in terms of accessibility and impact.

The global development community has recognised the importance of FCBOs in eradicating poverty, fostering peace, and driving sustainable progress. The United Nations and its agencies have highlighted their role as vital connectors between local and national stakeholders, amplifiers of community voices, and providers of critical services. Many FCBOs also hold official consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), influencing international decision-making processes.

Personal Insights and Success Stories

Through my work with organisations such as World Vision and the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF – Caritas Scotland), I have witnessed the transformative power of FCBOs firsthand.

In Africa, churches have played a pivotal role in providing education and healthcare services to remote and underserved communities. In Rwanda, I managed a Peace and Reconciliation Programme that brought individuals, families, and communities together in the aftermath of the genocide, fostering healing and peaceful coexistence.

In India, I partnered with PRAKRUTHI, a community-based organisation in Kolar District, to promote sustainable agricultural practices among women farmers. This initiative not only enhanced the economic well-being of their families but also improved access to education for their children, especially girls. These are just a few examples of how FCBOs create tangible, life-changing impacts on the ground.

Faith and Community-Based Organisations are vital partners in addressing global challenges. Governments, international agencies, donors, and philanthropies must acknowledge their contributions and invest in their capacity. We can help them expand their reach and impact by equipping FCBOs with the knowledge and tools necessary to strengthen their fundraising efforts.
