As a senior professional, I'm interested in understanding how we can use empathy to positively influence how our employees act, and how we can use it to motivate and empower them to achieve more. By understanding our employees’ on a deeper level, we can provide more effective communication strategies and foster collaboration that leads to greater productivity and enhanced satisfaction in the workplace. With just a little effort, we can create an environment in which everyone is encouraged to strive for their best and truly enjoy their work.??
Organizations have long placed more emphasis on hard skills when recruiting and managing employees, assuming that job performance and employee engagement are products of having the right technical abilities and job knowledge. But over the past few years, we’ve come to understand that this is not the case. Soft skills, such as an employee’s ability to be a good listener, be empathetic and be a motivator, are the true drivers of engagement in the workplace.?
Unfortunately, many organizations still employ outdated techniques when it comes to engaging employees. Making something compulsory, such as a 9-5 office job, will not motivate employees. While it can be tempting to force employees to adhere to a certain way of working, this won’t help them feel connected to the company in a meaningful way.??
Instead, organizations need to focus on creating an atmosphere where employees can express themselves and feel supported. People need to feel their manager and colleagues are open to their ideas, problems and feelings. This connection and understanding will drive engagement, resulting in greater productivity and job satisfaction.???
Creating an environment where employees feel safe, supported and valued is not an easy task but it is achievable. From setting up a mentoring program to introducing unstructured team activities and events, there are many ways for organizations to show that they take the opinions, interests and well-being of their team seriously. In doing so, the organization will build a sense of trust and loyalty, enabling employees to be more relaxed and engaged in their work. An atmosphere of openness and cooperation is a cornerstone of any successful workplace and should be nurtured in order to ensure long-term employee engagement.???

Organizations should remember that hard skills can be learnt, but soft skills are essential for creating a culture and an atmosphere in which employees can be engaged, productive and successful.
In order to nurture a truly engaged, motivated and committed workforce, we must focus on the softer side of employee engagement.?
It is important to build a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship with your employees. Practical steps such as asking how people are, having regular one-on-one meetings, attending to any personal and professional requests and assigning tasks based on employees' strengths and interests can help foster this atmosphere. Taking the time to understand and accommodate your employees' needs will be beneficial in the long run as they are your greatest asset. By doing this, you can create a prosperous workplace in which everyone is valued and can thrive.??
By paying attention to the preferences of your employees and valuing their feedback, you can ensure that your team works together in an efficient and productive manner. This also helps to create a better work-life balance for all involved, which can be beneficial for their physical and mental health. Practical examples such as considering individual work preferences, respecting their energy levels, and providing them with the necessary support to help them build confidence can make a world of difference. Ultimately, your employees are your greatest assets, and dedicating some effort to helping them fulfil their potential will benefit both them and your?organization.???
In conclusion, it is clear that empathy is a key characteristic of leadership, and having an empathetic leader yields far-reaching positive impacts. We have seen that it leads to improved productivity, greater engagement, and lower attrition rate. These results all contribute to giving the company a great reputation, which is essential in securing the best talent.
It is clearly beneficial to prioritize empathy in leadership; not only will it foster success in the workplace, but it will be rewarded through the employer brand.?

1 年Great post Nikoletta and a much needed discussion. I learned so much about empathy while studying conflict resolution and mediation. My takeaway: it’s hard to walk in the other’s shoes. Many fail at basics like understanding, naming and expressing one’s own emotions. Others act like they listen, but it’s more for responding, not so much for truly understanding. So I’d say yes prioritize empathy but leaders should also strive to improve their listening and understanding skills starting with themselves.
