Harnessing AI for Public Good: 4 Ways AI Will Positively Impact Our World in 2023 and Beyond
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the Asia Tech 2023 ATxAI conference at Capella Singapore, invited by IMDA. In this article, I would like to share my personal takeaway from the speech by guest-of-honour Minister Mrs Josephine Teo and the thought-provoking conversations among the leaders about global trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) trustworthiness and their implications for our digital economy.
We know that AI has revolutionised various industries & continues to make advancements that shape our daily lives. With its increasing intuitiveness and widespread use, the government has a pivotal role to play in scaling and implementing AI experimentation. From scam detection and healthcare to education and energy efficiency, AI is poised to bring about significant positive changes. Let us explore some use cases of AI in four different verticals!
Use case 1: Scam Detection
Have you heard about voice impersonation scams? Scammers have turned to AI tools that create voice recordings of family members in distress and use it to demand ransom. While AI has been a tool of enablement for scam organisations, it has also been instrumental in detecting & combating phishing crimes and aiding in the recovery of stolen assets. Leveraging AI algorithms and machine learning models, patterns can be analysed to identify suspicious activities and accurately detect phishing attacks. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, cybersecurity firms and financial institutions are key to sharing data and insights, enhancing the defence against phishing scams.?
While implementing AI for scam detection poses ethical challenges such as privacy concerns, the potential of AI-powered solutions to protect individuals and organisations from evolving phishing techniques is promising.
Use case 2: Healthcare
The ageing population in Singapore is a growing concern, with estimates suggesting that one in four individuals will be aged by 2030. To help alleviate the stress an ageing population puts on the economy, AI plays a crucial role here. AI enables personalised healthcare by analysing patient data, enabling early disease detection, risk assessment and treatment recommendations. Collectively, this helps reduce clinical diagnosis costs and improve hospitalisation efficiency while providing tailored care. Collaborative initiatives between the government and healthcare providers, such as the SingHealth-SGInnovate partnership, are essential in implementing AI-based solutions and promoting responsible AI practices to ensure patient safety and trust.
Use case 3: Education
Our next generations are our future and education plays a pivotal role in equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to shape a better world. With AI, the potential to revolutionise education is limitless. Two of the most common use cases of AI in education are automated grading processes and personalised tutoring to students. With AI-powered grading systems, educators can save time on manual grading, enabling them to focus more on individualised instruction and student engagement. Through leveraging AI algorithms, they can understand students' learning patterns, intelligent tutoring systems that provide personalised feedback and guidance can be developed. Embracing AI in education enhances the learning experience for students of all ages through innovative and adaptive teaching methods, helping address the ever-evolving demands of education in a rapidly changing world. This is applicable to professionals adults who would like to upgrade their skillset through continuous learning.
Use case 4: Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
Finally, AI can be a helpful tool in helping achieve the net-zero goal and combat climate change. This is mainly done by improving energy efficiency with AI applications. For instance, AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data to identify patterns, optimise energy usage, and predict demand. In turn, this information allows individuals and businesses to make better decisions, switch to more sustainable practices and play their role in minimising their carbon footprint, contributing to a greener future.
AI's potential for the public good is vast and limitless. As the government leads the way in scaling and implementing AI experimentation, it is crucial to prioritise and encourage innovative ideas that could continue to grow their potential. By harnessing the power of AI responsibly and inclusively, we can drive positive societal change and create a better future for all.
