The harness connection at front or back in MEWP’s (pros and cons)
After helpful comments on my last post I thought I would turn this into a discussion. Back connection (thanks to Mark and Michael for below paraphrased comments)
“ … recommended to connect to the rear worldwide due to the forces on your body. Middle of the shoulder blades can withstand far more force than the front ribcage, which will break ribs, puncture lungs, lead to internal bleeding and death. The front ring is not for fall arrest, it is for fall restraint ie: a pole strap, or a roof worker on a static/life line or a type 2 or 3 retractable reel etc. Adjustable lanyards can shorten the 1.8m lanyard to say 1.2m length for fall restraint”.
… “The front restricts the work being done. Lanyards should be adjustable to prevent the wearer being thrown out of MEWP, but still give free movement.
https://www.ewpa.com.au/uploads/Safety%20Guidance%20Notes/Harnesses%20in%20MEWPs%20-%20July%202015%20v3.pdf. All about the risk and the type of lanyard/use/situation. A lanyard that is adjustable will work for all heights. A 1.8m lanyard allows a worker to fall and be injured or worse. It does state that the shortest possible lanyard to be used. A correctly used adjustable lanyard takes out the risk of falls completely. Comfort is the least of issues. If the head falls back, the neck could snap.
