BJ and Danielle Siegel embarked on a journey to realize their dream home amidst the picturesque hills of Sonoma County, California, a region known for its stunning natural landscapes and thriving wine industry. Their vision was to create a dwelling that harmonized with the land, embodying simplicity and comfort while minimizing its environmental footprint.
BJ, a seasoned architect renowned for his innovative designs and his role as the head of store design at Apple, approached the project with a distinct perspective. He sought a solution that would require minimal oversight during construction, allowing him to balance his demanding professional commitments with the realization of his personal sanctuary. Fascinated by the concept of customizable prefab design, the Siegels were drawn to the weeHouse, a creation of Geoffrey Warner from Alchemy Architects in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The essence of the weeHouse lies in its minimalist approach, characterized by clean lines and expansive windows that frame the surrounding landscape as the focal point of the living space. For BJ and Danielle, this design ethos resonated deeply, reflecting their belief that "less is more." They embraced the challenge of creating a home that eschewed excess in favor of simplicity, recognizing that true luxury lies in refinement rather than opulence.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the decision to opt for a modular build held practical advantages, particularly in the notoriously expensive San Francisco Bay Area. By leveraging prefabricated construction methods, the Siegels could streamline the building process, reducing costs and minimizing the logistical challenges associated with traditional site-built homes.
In configuring their living space, the Siegels prioritized functionality and privacy, especially considering the needs of their teenage son, Jules. They opted for two separate boxes arranged at an angle, creating distinct zones for each member of the family while maintaining a sense of cohesion and flow. The larger box encompasses the communal areas, housing the kitchen, open dining room, and Jules' bedroom, while the second box serves as BJ and Danielle's private retreat, complete with a bedroom and bath. A central unit within each box delineates space and facilitates organization, with one containing Jules' bathroom and the other housing a closet for the Siegels.
In the backdrop of Sonoma County's idyllic landscape, the Siegels' home stands as a testament to their commitment to sustainable living and thoughtful design. Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, their dwelling embodies the spirit of the region, where a reverence for nature coexists with a dedication to innovation and modernity. As BJ and Danielle settle into their bespoke abode, they find solace in knowing that they have crafted not just a house, but a haven that reflects their values and aspirations.
