Harmonizing Hearts and Minds at Work: Leveraging Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a thriving future

Recently I attended and provided a Keynote address in Porto (Portugal) entitled “Harmonizing Hearts and Minds at Work: Leveraging Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a thriving future”.

The presentation provided an exciting opportunity to acknowledge the importance of EI being embedded in AI (and not the other way around!).

EI is not the poor cousin or the so called “soft option”, but rather is critical to the design, understanding and application of meaningful and positive AI development.

We need to ensure that AI does not replicate and threaten EI (and even our humanity?). We need to question the exponential growth of AI and instead value and develop EI’s integration with AI.

Lakhani (HBR, 2023) suggests AI won’t replace humans, but humans with AI could well replace humans without AI! So what are some of the take home messages in developing EI in the era of AI’s emergence:

  • Machine learning and AI could improve and certainly lower costs: so don’t

fight the technology!

  • Review and welcome the change personally and in your work context and

aim to work to make it fruitful and complimentary.

  • And on the EI front remember emotions are information and they are neither

good or bad! Importantly our emotional skills are built on our living in the real

world (Brackett, 2024)

Artificial Intelligence is already with us, and it is a tool for us to use in our daily lives.

We need to develop a meaningful EI and AI partnership…it won’t go away!

Finally, I was going to share some thoughts on the topic of acknowledgment, but the

EI/AI debate got in the way! However, increasingly as AI advances and when we

want to share, ask or discuss with our own AI Chatbot, it will be useful to be polite in

our conversation.

Why?

Because one day the very technologies of AI tools will possess keen memories and will remember your lack of courtesy and poor good will!!!
