HARMONIZED STANDARDS FOR PRESSES

HARMONIZED STANDARDS FOR PRESSES

I published a guide for presses producers about selection of harmonized standards for different types of presses. It was 2019 and since that time some of those standards have been superseded not only by newer releases, but also by completely different standard numbers.

For a number of years, I have been involved with the manufacture and CE certification of various types of presses and made a condensed summary list on technical standards applicable for different types of presses.

?

Pre 2019 the applicable standards for presses depending on how they were driven, mechanical, Hydraulic and pneumatic were:

  • EN 692:2005 +A1:2009(Mechanical Presses),
  • EN 693:2001 +A2:2011(Hydraulic Presses) and
  • EN 13736:2003+A1:2009 (Pneumatic Presses).

?

However, they were all later superseded by:

  • EN ISO 16092-1:2018 (part 1) which covers mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic presses (General safety).
  • EN ISO 16092-2:2020 (part 2) which provides detailed requirements for Mechanical presses,
  • EN ISO 16092-3:2018 (part 3) which provides detailed requirements for Hydraulic presses,
  • EN ISO 16092-4:2020 (part 4) which provides detailed requirements for Pneumatic presses.

?

All the 4 parts of EN ISO 16092 are harmonized with Machinery Directive 2006/42/WE and they are all C type standards what means that they provide presumption of conformity with Essential Health and Safety Requirements.

Would this mean that conformity to part 1 is sufficient to conform to the directive?

- No.

The following statement can be found in ?EN ISO 16092-1: “To confer a presumption of conformity with the relevant essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC, this standard (providing general/common requirements for a whole machine family) has to be applied together with one of those standards as specified is the scope (providing specific requirements for a particular category of machinery within this family), once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities under Directive 2006/42/EC.”

?

The old standards: EN 692, EN 693 and EN 13736 still exist within the harmonized standards list but with notes that presumption of conformity has been withdrawn.

Once your press model has been placed on the market demonstrating conformity to the Essential Heath and Safety requirements as detailed in the Directive by applying the applicable harmonized standards you can continue to produce the machine under the same declaration as long as no modifications have been made to the original machine, in case of any modifications, the machine will have to comply with the current legislations and standards.

Do not hesitate to get in touch if you produce presses and need to CE mark them.
