THE HARE AND THE HYENA
The first to receive his message to be delivered to the umpires was Hare, followed closely by Hyena. Hare having heard the dangers involved in the careless descending of the hill from this side, decided to device a way that could ensure that he descended the hill in the most careful way possible. He saw that, since the hill was very steep and slippery, the only way was to approach it backwards, so that his hind legs would descend fist, making him crawl on his stomach backwards, and his front legs stabilizing his every move. Having trained physically for the two days they were given to prepare for the tournament, Hare found the exercise he had to go through, manageable. So all he had to do was for him to patiently be able to go through the whole process until he reached the bottom. In the process he discovered that the exercises he had undergone before the tournament started, after all finally came in very handy. On the other hand, Hyena watched with a lot of amusement, what Hare was doing, and thought, he would not go through that tiring process because he was more dignified for that. So he decided to look for a big strong rope and tied it on a tree. Once he had tied it firmly on a tree, he decided to tie the other end around his body. Once he had accomplished this, he decided to let himself down as quickly as possible so that he could not be discovered by either of the umpires who were officiating the tournament. Unfortunately, Warthog was passing by, and noticed what was going on, and decided to cut the rope that Hyena was using to descend the hill, using his sharp teeth, for in the process, according the rules, Hyena was cheating, and using a rope to descend the hill would give him undue advantage. This made hyena to fall to the bottom of the hill, but since he had almost reached the bottom of the hill, the worst that could happen to him was to break both his hind legs, for he landed on both of them heavily. Hare on the other hand, patiently and painstakingly, after a long struggle, finally was able to reach the bottom of the hill safely but very exhausted from the hard work he had done, and finally delivered the Paramount Chief’s message to the Umpires. Hyena did the same, but was in great pain from what had happened to him. And later on Warthog was able to deliver his report to the rest of the Umpires disqualifying Hyena.
Finally, it was time for the winner of the tournament to be declared. Hare was declared the winner of the tournament, to the joy and jubilation of the rest of his friends among the animals who had come to cheer him on in the tournament. So Hare was given a herd of cattle by the Paramount Chief, and also was given a hand in marriage to the Paramount Chief’s daughter. This then goes on to explain why, even to this day, Hyena limps when walking and has short hind legs that are not so strong, unlike those of Hare, which are strong.
