The Hardest Lesson I Learned About Growth

The Hardest Lesson I Learned About Growth

I remember the exact moment I realized my business was broken.

Stripe sent a notification—another sale came in.

I should have been excited. But instead, I felt trapped.

  • 80-hour weeks.
  • Barely able to pay myself what I wanted.
  • No clear way to generate new revenue without grinding harder.

That’s when it hit me—if I didn’t figure out how to get customers without relying on referrals or nonstop effort, this wasn’t going to end well.

The Wake-Up Call

I had two choices:

? Keep working insane hours and hope things got better.

? Build a system that could bring in customers without relying on referrals or constant hustle.

I knew the answer. But getting there wasn’t easy.

At first, I had tried everything for lead generation. Nothing was sticking.

Until one day, I closed my first sale from a completely cold audience. No referrals. No warm intros.

That changed everything.

Because if I could do it once, I could do it again—and again.

The Shift That Changed Everything

At first, I just wanted to provide a great service. But to do that, I needed help. To get help, I needed more revenue. And to get more revenue, I had to become a sales-driven organization.

That meant:

? Sending offers to my list.

? Launching paid media funnels that put me in front of my perfect customer.

? Building a sales funnel that could take someone from never hearing about us to trusting (and buying from) us.

Once I had that in place, everything changed.

Now, if I want more sales, I flip a switch—instead of waiting, hoping, or chasing.

The Biggest Mistake I See

Most business owners try to hire their way out of this problem.

They bring on an agency, a marketing hire, or a sales team before they have a single channel that can generate customers on demand.

If your deals are still coming from referrals and your network, expecting someone else to figure out:

?? Who to target

?? What messaging converts

?? What offer gets people to buy

…is a massive ask.

And if you, as the owner, don’t have the skills to understand what success looks like, you’ll never make a good hire.

The answer?

You need to build the system yourself first—so when you do bring people in, they’re plugging into a machine that already works.
