The harder I practice the luckier I get!
Gary Player - I was practicing in a bunker in Texas & this old boy with a big hat stopped to watch. The first shot he saw me hit went in the hole. He said, "50 bucks if you knock the next one in." I holed it. Then he says, "You got $100 if you hole the next one." In it went for three in a row. As he peeled off the bills he said, "Boy, I've never seen anyone so lucky in my life." And I shot back, "Well, the harder I practice, the luckier I get." That's where the quote originated.
I was once privileged to watch Gary Player in action.
After watching him strike one of his laser-like drives, a guy standing next to me said, "I wish I could hit the ball like that. Mine barely get off the ground."
I asked him, "Do you play much?"
"No, about once a month."
"Do you get out the range often?"
"Range? Ha! What's that? Practice is way overrated."
And therein lies the proof of the pudding.
Gary Player has been known for his hard work at perfecting his game. His practice routines are legendary. He would hit balls until his hands bled.
And so, to us Sales Pros - just like the Golf Pros - we should always be practicing our game.
When I ask salespeople in training sessions “who analyses every sales call after you have just completed it?”
Sadly, the answer is normally just a blank look.
So what are the 2 secrets to becoming a sales Legend, just as Gary Player is a golfing Legend?
Live by these 2 basic rules!
1. be constantly learning
2. be constantly practicing, & getting better
And today, I am going to the driving range….. to practice!
Happy selling in 2019!
