How do you decide between getting a hardcover or a kindle version?
As a book lover who's moved countries and houses frequently, the hardcover vs. digital dilemma is real! 8 years ago, while relocating – with a heavy heart, we gave away most of physical books (literally too - the heaviest cartons had books in them!). Kindle and audiobooks became my new companions.
With some Audible credits pending, I bought it on a whim (forgetting that I had actually read it earlier, though way too long back)...and long flights provided the perfect time to re-read it.
And omg this one is a treasure trove- it decodes the world around us, so much so that many of my niggling questions about people’s behavior, sales, marketing, and HR were answered!
THAT’s when the "hardcover urge" struck.
And it hit me.
My hardcover purchases usually stem from my desire to have my son read that book. When a hardcover is lying around the house, the chances of him picking it up to explore is much higher compared to it being in my kindle!
But the realizations did not stop there!
Behind this intuitive decision – is a lesson I learned from this very book.

We all know visibility helps persuasion.
But what was interesting that ‘MERE’ visibility affects our brain to be persuaded. It does not have be accompanied with a pitch or anything. Just exposure to a certain thing, without any context - can influence us. It’s not up for debate- it is scientific & proven. We are being persuaded by what is in our vision field, whether we like it or not.
Like how I ended up reading 'Diary of A Wimpy Kid' - see pic below. My house -at that time- was FULL of the books from the series. (Even though if you would have ever asked me 'Will you read this book' - my answer would have been always NO. haha! That was son applying the same principle, unknowingly!!!)
My takeaway – Be very very intentional about what is there in our visibility field, whether offline or online. (For e.g. the social media post is persuading you even if you don’t ‘like’ it. Mere it being on your feed is enough for you to consider it favorably, even if your cognitive brain does not recognize that!)
So intuitively am employing this principle to decide whether to buy an audio book or hard cover – as hardcover would be in our vision field much more and can be way more pursuasive for my son to pick up and read!
Btw, this book offers tons of applicable lessons for HR, leaders, and life in general! Highly recommend it! #books #readinglife #hr #persuasion
Until next time!

8 个月Nice read and yes I'm a hardcover enthusiast for the touch and feel and it helps the high myopia. Audible is a temptation I succumb to often for its accessibility and just that auditory stimulus if its in the authors voice.

9 个月I want to go for hardcover whenever it's possible, because I love the paper smell and the feeling when I turn pages.. for me Kindle does not give the same .
I enjoy chatting with people, gathering insights, understanding matters beyond the surfaces and connecting the dots. I am also looking for opportunities for development and growth in People function.
9 个月My fictional books are usually on Kindle. Most of others books are hardcopies. I like to write notes with a pen. It's not the same writing notes with a pen vs typing it especially when reflection is involved. On another note, my mum said to leave the valuables out of sight to discourage robbery or pickpocking (temptations). Same logic for ice cream, she would put them away so we don't see them and want them before dinner. So I guess if the physical book is lying around somewhere, possible temptation is there.
