Hard truths or idle rant

There are now so many people standing on top of their social media built ivory towers shouting various types of “blah, blah, blah” at each other, claiming to have discovered the holy grail and, in reality, simply stating “Look at me, I’m awesome and I’m better than you”.

Well you are not. You are just another stream of vapid vitriol that combines with everyone elses to create what? Answers?… no. Confusion?… possibly — with those that bother to listen long enough to get confused.

What you are really creating is White Noise. A random, constant ringing in the ears and wringing of the hands for all the poor bastards (that’s everyone else) who are down ‘beneath’ you, in the streets and fields and pollution and floods and fires and non-recycled rubbish tips and shit filled rivers and urban traffic jams and re-skilling centres and tumble down schools and rubber boats bobbing about on plastic oceans and bullet riddled (metaphorically or literally) alleyways — like rats in a trap.

You might think that you are successfully wowing everyone with your wonderful policy decisions, agreements, claims to be working ‘for’ us, smart suits, banks of highly paid expert advisors, amazing powers of negotiation and ‘public’ leadership (ha ha).

You might think you are proving change with your foundations and community profit share programmes and ‘commitment to SDG’s’ (or whatever the fuck these are called now) and innovative technologies and ‘workplace wellbeing programmes’ and and…

You might think you are God’s gift to humanity with your sexy models and gleaming rhetoric and lovely, complicated language and genius friends and think tank groups and shiny books and protestations about dystopian, utopian, protopian, myopian futures.

You might think you are engaging with ‘citizens’ through your megaphone delivered soundbites and imploring messages about activism and easy attacks on ‘the establishment’ and a complete absence of anything constructive and doable.

Well, none of you are impressing enough of us mere mortals (even those within your own organisations) because none of you have figured out the essential truth. You each have bits of the puzzle but you will never have it all until you learn to become grown ups, trash the egos, climb out of your diapers and sandpits and separatist/protectionist colouring in books (you’ve been painting by numbers for centuries and now we can see through the wash), gain some magnanimity and actually learn to work and play well with each other — for real — and with us, the ordinary people who are far from the dumb, unthinking plebs that you think we are.

So why don’t you climb down from your ‘higher position’, dismantle those towers, build better systems and do what you all claim to be doing but are too busy protecting your status, systems, position and place to actually get on and do.

Why don’t you band together, co-create, become coherent, recognise that you really don’t have the answers on your own but when truly working together — and together with us — you just might.

The funny thing is that most of us really do want you to work with us, for us. We are really gunning for you because we know that our future is in your hands as much as it is in our own. We want you to succeed and we will celebrate you if you do.

Surely this is better than the stress of your current lives?

So, gaze into that mirror, take a good long, hard look at yourselves — and smile, be joyful, happy in the knowledge that you DO have a future. It might not be the one you thought you’d have but, I promise, it will be much much better for you and all of us.
