Playwright, author, and psychologist Florida Scott Maxwell, in her truly wonderful little book, The Measure of My Days, reflected back from a high perch in her 80s on her life's big lessons and said she had come to realize something of vital importance: The hard things, indeed the very hardest things, the things she most disliked throughout her life had, in a surprising act of spiritual alchemy, created in her the qualities of character, a sort of "hardihood" that she most prized.
